Chapter 12 - Bruno’s Begging In The Rain And The Cold Hard Truth

(Note: Deepening the narrative focus onto the final criminal sentencing and the emotional closure of the saga.)
Two months later, the State Superior Court held the final criminal sentencing hearing for the Sterling family.
The courtroom was packed to capacity with reporters, former colleagues from Apex Freight, defrauded investors, and community members.
Judge Marcus Thornton, a jurist renowned for his zero-tolerance stance on white-collar embezzlement and domestic violence, sat upon the bench with a mountain of sentencing memoranda before him.
Indigo Sterling was the first to be called forward.
Stripped of his tailored suits and expensive cigars, Indigo looked like a broken old man as his public defender made a desperate plea for home confinement due to age and health complications.
Judge Thornton leaned forward, his voice cutting through the room like a cold winter wind.
“Mr. Indigo Sterling, for over a decade you operated an elaborate confidence scheme, preying upon investors while using your own son to funnel stolen corporate assets to fund a life of fraudulent luxury. But far worse than your financial crimes is the sheer, unmitigated brutality you demonstrated against the woman who provided you shelter. You beat your daughter-in-law within inches of her life out of sheer greed.”
The judge adjusted his glasses.
“On the counts of Securities Fraud, Grand Larceny, and Criminal Conspiracy, you are hereby sentenced to fourteen years in state prison, with no possibility of parole before serving eighty-five percent of your term. Furthermore, a total restitution order of $1.8 million is entered against you.”
Indigo slumped forward, weeping openly as two bailiffs led him through the heavy side door toward the holding block.
Next came Amber Sterling.
Amber stood before the bench clutching a rosary, her defense attorney arguing that she had been under the "undue psychological influence" of her husband.
Judge Thornton wasn't moved.
“Mrs. Amber Sterling, the surveillance records, wiretaps, and eyewitness testimony paint a picture of a woman motivated by pure cruelty and social vanity. You actively participated in a felony physical assault, attempted witness intimidation, and knowingly wore stolen heirlooms while parading through high-society galas.”
“Your Honor, please!” Amber wailed, falling to her knees before the defense table. “I have heart palpitations! I won’t survive prison!”
“You should have considered your health, Mrs. Sterling, before you attacked Jade Sterling in her own home,” Judge Thornton responded coldly. “On the counts of Felony Assault, Extortion, and Grand Theft, you are sentenced to seven years at the State Correctional Facility for Women.”
Amber screamed and fought as the female deputies dragged her out of the courtroom, her cries echoing through the marble hallways until the heavy oak doors shut tight.
Finally, Bruno Sterling was called forward.
Bruno stood alone at the podium. His mistress, Vanessa, had completely vanished, having moved back to the Midwest after cooperating with federal prosecutors to avoid criminal conspiracy charges. He had no friends in the gallery. He had no family left.
When the judge asked Bruno if he had any statement to make before sentencing, Bruno turned slowly and looked at me, sitting in the front row of the gallery beside Chloe Vance.
“Jade...” Bruno choked out, his voice cracked with absolute ruin. “I know you will never forgive me. I know I destroyed our life. I was weak. I let my parents control me. I let greed blind me to the only good thing that ever happened to my life. If I could give my life to take back that night... I would.”
I looked at him across the ten feet of space that separated us.
I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel hatred. I felt the profound, serene neutrality of a woman who was looking at a complete stranger.
“Mr. Bruno Sterling,” Judge Thornton spoke, bringing the gavel down on Bruno’s life. “You betrayed your fiduciary duty to your company, you betrayed your marriage, and you stood by while your wife was brutally beaten, demanding she pay for her own survival. For the crimes of Grand Larceny, Interstate Wire Fraud, and Criminal Negligence with Depraved Indifference, you are sentenced to ten years in state prison.”
Bruno lowered his head, closed his eyes, and whispered:
“I understand, Your Honor.”
The bailiffs stepped forward, cuffed Bruno’s wrists, and led him away through the heavy iron door.
As the iron latch clicked shut, the courtroom gallery erupted into murmurs of satisfaction from the defrauded victims and supporters.
Chloe turned to me, wrapping an arm around my shoulder.
“It’s over, Jade. Every single one of them is gone.”

I took a deep, clean breath, feeling the cool morning air fill my lungs.
“No, Chloe,” I smiled, stepping out of the courtroom into the bright sunlight flooding the courthouse steps. “It’s not over. It’s just beginning.”
