Chapter 6 - The Forensic Audit of a Broken Marriage

By the next morning, the financial demolition of Luca Sterling’s fraudulent empire was moving at breakneck speed.

Arthur Diaz and his team of forensic investigators worked throughout the night in Morgan Vance’s high-rise downtown office. The cryptographic keys extracted from the red ledger proved to be the ultimate skeleton key.

Inside the encrypted digital vault, Arthur found unedited audio recordings Luca had kept on his private cloud—insurance policies he had compiled against his own business associates and, ironically, against Chloe Bennett.

“Listen to this,” Morgan said, pressing play on her conference room speakerphone as I sat across the glass table sipping a fresh espresso.

The audio file crackled to life. It was a recording from four months ago, taken in Luca’s private home office.

“Don't worry about Jessi,” Luca’s voice sneered through the speakers, cold, calculating, and dripping with contempt. “She’s working eighty hours a week at the hospital. She’s too exhausted to check the bank statements. By the time she realizes the trust fund is gone and the loans are defaulted, we’ll be on a private flight out of Miami. I’ll make sure she’s legally saddled with the bankruptcy while we live off the Cayman yield in Costa Rica.”

“What about Fiona?” Chloe’s voice asked on the recording, without a shred of maternal or familial empathy. “We can’t drag a toddler across international borders without custody papers.”

“We leave her with Jessi,” Luca scoffed. “Let Jessi drown in the debt and raise the kid on food stamps. She wanted to play the saint; let her live like one.”

Hearing my husband’s voice so casually condemn our innocent daughter to poverty and destitution caused a cold, sharp ache in my chest. But that ache didn't break me—it forged an impenetrable wall of steel around my heart.

“Is this admissible in criminal court?” I asked Morgan.

“Not only is it admissible under state wiretapping exceptions for financial crimes,” Morgan smiled like a wolf scenting blood, “but it establishes premeditated intent for grand larceny, criminal conspiracy, and intentional child abandonment. The state prosecutor just upgraded Luca’s charges to Class-A Felonies.”

“What about the money?” I asked.

Arthur turned his monitor toward me. “Here’s the beauty of blockchain forensics, Jessi. Luca thought he was clever using decentralized privacy coins. But he made one fatal rookie mistake: he routed the final transaction through a regulated liquidity bridge in Switzerland that complies with international Interpol subpoenas.”

Arthur tapped a few keystrokes, and a massive wire confirmation screen loaded with a green checkmark.

“We successfully froze and repatriated one point eight million dollars,” Arthur announced. “That includes Fiona’s three-hundred-thousand-dollar trust fund—with four years of compounding interest—plus the liquidated equity from the Costa Rica villa and Luca’s hidden offshore stash.”

“And the predatory loans in my name?”

“Completely nullified,” Morgan added. “We provided the forged signature samples and the audio confession to the lending banks. The fraud departments have officially cleared your credit record and transferred the entire seven hundred and fifty thousand dollar liability directly onto Luca’s personal criminal restitution tab.”

For the first time in three days, I took a deep, full breath.

My daughter’s future was secured. My career was protected. My mother’s legacy was restored.

Now came the final part of the operation: ensuring that Luca Sterling and Chloe Bennett never saw the light of free day again.
