Chapter 15 - The Sunrise Promise and the Real Golden Puppy

The following morning at 6:00 A.M., the sun rose over the quiet lake of Whispering Pines, casting long, golden beams of light across Fiona’s bedroom.
I gently pushed open her bedroom door.
Fiona was fast asleep in the center of her queen-sized canopy bed, buried under three soft pastel quilts, hugging her favorite teddy bear. The room was warm, filled with the gentle scent of lavender and fresh morning breeze from the cracked window.
I sat down on the edge of the mattress and gently brushed a stray curl from her forehead.
“Fiona,” I whispered softly. “Wake up, sweetheart. Mommy has a surprise for you.”
Fiona stirred, stretching her small arms above her head and letting out a happy, sleepy yawn. She opened her big hazel eyes and smiled instantly, throwing her arms around my neck for a warm, tight morning hug.
“Good morning, Mommy,” she chirped, completely free of fear, hesitation, or trauma. “Is it time for pancakes?”
“Pancakes are coming,” I laughed, kissing her cheek. “But first, do you remember the game you played a long time ago? The bad game that Daddy made up?”
Fiona’s smile softened, but her eyes remained calm and safe. “Operation Silent Soldier?”
“Yes, baby,” I said, holding both of her small, warm hands in mine. “You remember how I told you that you never lost any game? That you were the bravest, strongest girl in the whole world, and that Mommy would always keep her promises?”
“I remember,” she nodded.
“Well, close your eyes and put your hands out.”
Fiona giggled and squeezed her eyes shut, holding out her little hands.
I reached down beside the bed, where Marcus and Morgan had quietly slipped in a large wicker basket with a big red ribbon tied to the handle.
I lifted a tiny, eight-week-old English Golden Retriever puppy out of the basket. The puppy had soft, cream-colored fur, floppy ears, big brown eyes, and a wagging tail that beat like a tiny drum against my arm.
I gently placed the warm, wiggly bundle of fur directly into Fiona’s lap.
“Open your eyes, Fiona.”
Fiona opened her eyes.
She let out a gasp of pure, unfiltered, breathtaking wonder that filled the entire sunlit room.
The golden puppy immediately climbed up onto her chest, wagging its tail furiously and giving her nose three warm, wet puppy kisses.
“Mommy!” Fiona squealed with pure ecstasy, wrapping both arms around the puppy and burying her face in its soft golden fur. “A puppy! A real, golden puppy! Is he mine? Is he really mine?!”
“He’s yours, sweetheart,” I said, tears of absolute joy finally slipping down my cheeks as I wrapped my arms around both of them. “He’s yours forever. And in this house, nobody ever has to stay in the dark to earn love.”
“What’s his name, Mommy?” Fiona asked, holding the puppy up to eye level as it wagged its entire body with joy.
I looked at the sunlight streaming through the window, bathing my daughter and her new protector in golden warmth.
“His name is Sunny,” I whispered. “Because the sun is never going down on us again.”

Fiona hugged Sunny tightly against her chest, her sweet laughter echoing through the warm, safe halls of our new home, greeting the dawn of a life filled with truth, justice, and unconditional love.
