Chapter 5 - Bloodline Betrayal and the Stolen Trust

That evening, the quiet of the Silverwood cottage was shattered by the headlights of a battered sedan pulling up the gravel driveway.

I looked through the window curtain.

It was Chloe.

She had been released on bail—likely using the emergency cash she kept in her designer purse—and had tracked down my location through our family’s shared cloud account before I had time to purge her access.

I stepped out onto the front porch, pulling the wooden front door closed behind me so Fiona wouldn't hear.

The mountain air was freezing, but I didn't feel the cold.

Chloe stumbled out of the car. She looked completely unhinged. Her designer coat was smudged with dirt, her expensive blonde hair was tangled in the wind, and her eyes were bloodshot and wild.

“Jessi!” Chloe screamed, rushing toward the porch steps. “You have to drop the charges! Luca is sitting in a county holding cell, his bail is set at five hundred thousand dollars, and the bank just froze my debit cards! I can’t even pay for gas!”

“You’re trespassing, Chloe,” I said calmly, resting my hands in the pockets of my jacket. “You have thirty seconds to turn that car around before the county sheriff arrives.”

“How could you do this to your own sister?!” Chloe shrieked, her voice cracking with hysterical venom. “I’m your family! Blood is thicker than water!”

“You stopped being my family the day you let Luca steal Mom’s trust fund,” I replied, my voice slicing through the cold night like a scalpel. “You stopped being my sister the moment you laid in my bed while my five-year-old daughter lay freezing on a kitchen floor, drugged with forged prescriptions.”

Chloe froze. Her jaw dropped slightly, her eyes flickering with sudden, naked guilt.

“You… you know about the prescriptions?” she stammered, taking half a step backward.

“I know about the Costa Rica villa,” I continued, taking a slow step down the porch stairs toward her. “I know about the three-hundred-thousand-dollar trust fund. I know about the predatory loans in my name. And by sunrise tomorrow, federal wire fraud investigators from the Department of Justice will be reviewing every single text message on your iCloud.”

Chloe’s expression twisted from panic into pure, hideous malice. The mask of the helpless younger sister completely dissolved, revealing the rotten core beneath.

“You always thought you were better than me!” Chloe spat, her face contorting with rage. “Saint Jessi! The heroic trauma nurse! Mom always loved you more! She left you the house, she left Fiona the money, and what did I get? Nothing! Luca saw me for who I really was! He loved me more than he ever loved your boring, exhausted, self-righteous self!”

“Luca didn't love you, Chloe,” I said quietly, looking at her with nothing but pity and disgust. “Luca used you as a dummy corporation because you were too stupid and greedy to realize that when the house of cards fell, your name would be on every single fraudulent loan document.”

Chloe’s eyes widened in horror. “What?”

“Every signature on the Costa Rica purchase agreements is yours,” I said. “Every wire transfer from the offshore account was executed under your Social Security number. Luca set you up as the financial fall guy. When he goes to prison, you’re going right beside him as his primary co-conspirator.”

“No… no, that’s a lie! Luca promised me we were partners! He promised me we would start over in South America!”

“Check your email, Chloe,” I said coldly. “Morgan Vance just filed an emergency injunction. The offshore accounts are frozen. The Costa Rica deed has been seized under the Criminal Asset Forfeiture Act. You have nothing. You are broke, disgraced, and facing ten to fifteen years in federal prison.”

Chloe collapsed onto the gravel driveway, clutching her head in her hands and sobbing hysterically.

The flashing blue and red lights of a sheriff cruiser appeared through the pine trees at the end of the road.

“Here’s your ride, Chloe,” I said, turning my back on her and walking back up the porch steps. “Enjoy the cold.”
