Chapter 13 - The Grand Auction Of A Mooched Life: Luca’s Sports Cars On The Block

Two weeks after the final court decree was executed, the last remnants of Luca’s fabricated lifestyle were put up for public liquidation.
On a crisp, sunny Saturday morning, an elite automotive auction house in north Denver hosted a private asset sale on behalf of Skyline Crest Holdings.
Parked in the center of the showroom floor were the three luxury vehicles Luca had proudly leased and customized using corporate funds:
A custom-ordered 2024 Porsche 911 GT3 in chalk gray with carbon fiber trim.
A customized Range Rover SVAutobiography that Wendy had demanded for her weekly shopping excursions.
A limited-edition BMW M8 Competition coupe that Luca had used to parade around the country club.
Dozens of high-net-worth buyers, automotive collectors, and local business executives gathered around the auction block, holding bidding paddles and sipping espresso.
I sat in the private second-floor VIP mezzanine overlooking the showroom floor, holding two-week-old Lily against my shoulder. Evelyn sat beside me, flipping through the auction catalog with a grin of pure satisfaction.
“Every single dollar from this auction is going directly into Lily’s college and real estate trust,” Evelyn said, clinking her sparkling water glass against mine.
“Every single cent,” I agreed, smiling softly.
Down on the showroom floor, standing near the back exit by the public viewing gallery, was Luca.
He was dressed in a worn, faded sweater and cheap jeans, looking like a ghost haunting a world he no longer belonged to. He had walked three miles from the bus stop just to watch his beloved sports cars—the symbols of his vanity, the vehicles he had bragged about across social media—be auctioned off to the highest bidder.
The auctioneer’s rhythmic voice echoed through the high-ceilinged room:
“We have lot number forty-two, the 2024 Porsche 911 GT3, pristine condition, barely four thousand miles on the odometer! Starting bid at one hundred and eighty thousand! Do I hear one-eighty? One-eighty on the left! Now two hundred! Two hundred and twenty thousand! Going once... going twice... SOLD for two hundred and forty-five thousand dollars to paddle number eighty-four!”
BANG!
The auctioneer’s hammer fell.
Luca watched as a wealthy tech entrepreneur stepped forward, took the keys, and revved the engine. The powerful roar of the exhaust echoed through the building, vibrating the glass beneath Luca’s feet.
A single tear slid down Luca’s hollow cheek. He remembered the day he had forced me to sign the corporate lease authorization for that car, promising that he would use it to “close massive business deals for our family.”
He had used it for nothing but picking up bar tabs and flattering his own ego.
“Lot forty-three! The Range Rover SVAutobiography! Sold for one hundred and sixty thousand dollars!”
“Lot forty-four! The BMW M8 Competition! Sold for one hundred and thirty-five thousand dollars!”

In less than forty-five minutes, over half a million dollars was generated from the liquidation of Luca’s borrowed life. Every vehicle, every custom accessory, every trace of his existence was wiped clean, converted into cold, hard capital, and transferred directly into my daughter’s irrevocable trust account.
Luca turned slowly and walked out into the cold autumn wind, his hands stuffed deep into his empty pockets, completely invisible to the world of wealth and power he had so desperately tried to claim as his own.
