Chapter 12 - Emergency Courtroom Showdown: The Judge Reads The Ironclad Ledger

On Thursday morning at 9:00 AM sharp, the mahogany double doors of Courtroom 4B at the Boulder County District Court clicked shut behind us.

The courtroom was vast, solemn, and bathed in the pale morning sunlight filtering through high arched windows.

Presiding over the bench was the Honorable Judge Eleanor Vance-Montgomery—a legendary, no-nonsense jurist known throughout Colorado for her fierce intolerance of domestic deception and financial fraud.

I sat at the petitioner’s table, flanked by Phoebe Reed and David Chen. I wore an impeccably tailored navy suit, sitting straight, poised, and utterly serene.

Across the aisle sat Luca, wearing a cheap, ill-fitting gray suit borrowed from his cousin Arthur. He looked gaunt, completely broken, and utterly devoid of the smug arrogance he had displayed on the deck of the Miami yacht just days ago. Beside him sat Wendy, dressed in a muted black dress, her eyes swollen from days of continuous weeping.

Judge Eleanor adjusted her glasses, looking down over the rim at the massive stack of evidentiary documents on her bench.

“We are here this morning,” Judge Eleanor began, her voice reverberating through the silent courtroom like rolling thunder, “for the expedited dissolution of marriage and emergency asset determination in the matter of Jessica Vance versus Luca Vance.”

Arthur Vance, the cousin, stood up on trembling legs. “Your Honor, my client requests a sixty-day continuance to properly review the financial disclosures and mount an appropriate defense regarding the spousal maintenance claims—”

“Sit down, Mr. Vance,” Judge Eleanor commanded, cutting him off mid-sentence with a single strike of her gavel.

Arthur immediately dropped back into his seat like a scolded child.

Judge Eleanor opened the blue folder containing the prenuptial agreement and the forensic audit report.

“In my thirty-two years on the municipal and district bench,” the judge said, her sharp gaze locking onto Luca, “I have rarely seen a more grotesque display of bad faith, domestic cruelty, and unmitigated entitlement.”

Luca flinched, shrinking back into his chair.

“The evidence before this court is overwhelming and irrefutable,” Judge Eleanor continued. “The petitioner, Ms. Jessica Vance, entered this marriage with vast, independently earned assets, all of which were meticulously shielded by a valid, ironclad prenuptial agreement. The respondent, Mr. Luca Vance, not only contributed zero financial capital to the marital estate, but he also systematically embezzled over one point two million dollars from the petitioner’s corporate logistics operations.”

Wendy let out a quiet, gasping sob, but the judge silenced her with a single, icy glare.

“Furthermore,” Judge Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a tone of profound moral condemnation, “the court has reviewed the undisputed evidence showing that the respondent willfully altered the digital security codes of the Redwood Crest estate, locking his post-operative wife and seventy-two-hour-old newborn daughter out in freezing weather while he absconded to Florida on the petitioner’s funds.”

Judge Eleanor picked up her pen and began signing the final decrees with swift, decisive strokes.

“This court rules as follows:

First, the marriage of Jessica Vance and Luca Vance is officially and permanently dissolved.

Second, the prenuptial agreement is upheld in its entirety without exception. Mr. Luca Vance is awarded zero spousal maintenance, zero transitional support, and zero claim to any real property or proceeds from the sale of Redwood Crest Drive.

Third, the respondent’s voluntary waiver of parental rights is accepted and ratified by the court. Sole legal and physical custody of the minor child, Lily Vance, is awarded permanently and exclusively to Jessica Vance.

Fourth, the seized offshore funds amounting to one point two million dollars are awarded entirely to Jessica Vance as mandatory civil restitution.”

Judge Eleanor set down her pen and looked directly at Luca.

“Mr. Vance, you are further ordered to maintain a permanent protective distance of no less than one thousand yards from Jessica Vance, her family, and her child. Any violation will result in immediate felony incarceration without bail.”

BANG!

The gavel struck the sound block with the finality of a guillotine blade.

“Court is adjourned,” Judge Eleanor announced, rising from the bench.

Luca buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking with silent, uncontrollable sobs. He had lost his wife, his child, his home, his career, his money, and his reputation.

I stood up from the table, smoothed my jacket, and took a deep, liberating breath of clean air.

I didn't cast a single backward glance as Phoebe, David, and I walked out of the courtroom doors and into the bright, unclouded Colorado sunshine.
