Chapter 11 - The Forensic Audit: Uncovering The Secret Accounts And The Stolen Seed Money

Back in Denver, inside the quiet sanctuary of Evelyn’s private study, David Chen laid out three massive black binders across the desk.

It was Wednesday morning—exactly ten days since the night I was locked out in the rain. Lily was resting peacefully in my arms after her morning feeding, her tiny hand gripping my index finger with surprising strength.

“Jessi, you need to see what we uncovered in the secondary offshore ledgers,” David said, his voice unusually grave.

Phoebe Reed sat across from us, sipping black coffee, her sharp eyes scanning the open pages.

“What did Luca do, David?” I asked quietly.

David pointed to a complex financial wire diagram linking seven distinct domestic and international shell companies.

“When you assigned Luca to oversee the supply-chain expansion for Vance Logistics eighteen months ago,” David explained, “he didn't just overspend on company credit cards. He set up a phantom vendor company registered in the Cayman Islands called Apex Horizon Capital.”

I looked at the transaction records. My jaw tightened as the numbers registered in my mind.

“He routed over one point two million dollars of company vendor payments through this fake entity,” David continued. “He was systematically siphoning off ten percent of every logistics contract, laundering the funds through a secondary bank account in Belize, and storing the cash in a private crypto wallet.”

“Why?” Evelyn asked, leaning over my shoulder with a look of pure disgust. “He already had a quarter-million-dollar salary and unlimited access to household luxury!”

“Because he was planning this exit strategy for over a year,” Phoebe interjected, tapping the timeline with her pen. “Luca knew about the prenuptial agreement. He knew that if you ever caught on to his parasitic lifestyle, he would leave with nothing. So he orchestrated a scheme to steal over a million dollars, hide it in offshore accounts, and then use the pregnancy and postpartum recovery to push Jessi out of the primary residence.”

Phoebe leaned forward, her eyes flashing with cold, triumphant fury.

“He thought that by changing the locks and intimidating Jessi while she was recovering from major surgery, he could force a panicked settlement. He planned to offer to ‘walk away quietly’ in exchange for keeping the house and a lump-sum payout, completely unaware that we already had his offshore trail tracked down to the penny.”

A slow, icy smile spread across my face.

“Where is that one point two million dollars right now, David?” I asked.

“As of four o’clock yesterday afternoon,” David replied with a wide grin, “we served a certified emergency asset freeze through the International Financial Services Commission in Belize and the federal court in Denver. The entire balance of one million two hundred and forty thousand dollars has been seized and repatriated directly into your personal holding trust as restitution for corporate embezzlement.”

“And what about Luca’s personal status?” I asked.

Phoebe closed her binder with a satisfying, authoritative snap.

“The criminal fraud division has completed the indictment,” Phoebe said. “Luca is no longer just facing misdemeanor trespass. Tomorrow morning at nine o’clock, we enter Courtroom 4B for the final emergency dissolution hearing and the formal presentation of the felony embezzlement findings.”

I looked down at my baby daughter. Lily opened her bright, curious eyes, looking up at me with absolute innocence and pure trust.

“He thought he could leave us outside in the cold,” I whispered softly, gently kissing her cheek. “Tomorrow, we close the door on him forever.”
