Chapter 4 - A Late-Night Call to the Brother I Was Forced to Abandon

"Tell me where you are right now. I'm getting in the car," Gabriel said, his voice instantly shifting into the authoritative, protective tone that had shielded me throughout our childhood.
Gabriel was five years older than me and one of the sharpest corporate litigation attorneys in the Bay Area. When Nathan first began isolating me, Gabriel had seen right through his polished charm. He had confronted Nathan at a Thanksgiving dinner about his subtle, belittling remarks toward me. Nathan had orchestrated a massive scene, playing the victim and forcing me to choose between my husband and my brother. Trapped in the fog of Nathan's manipulation, I had chosen my husband.
"No, Gabe, don't come to the house," I whispered urgently, glancing toward the closed nursery door. "Nathan has security cameras at the entrance. If he sees you here, he’ll know something is wrong, and he’ll move the offshore accounts before we can freeze them."
"Offshore accounts?" Gabriel paused, his sharp legal instincts immediately kicking in. "Hannah, what has he done to you?"
For the next forty-five minutes, I laid out everything. I told him about the hospital hallway conversation, the lock on the master bedroom door, Serena Cole, the forged signatures on the mezzanine loan, and the twenty-five-million-dollar fraud scheme involving Lumina Tech.
Gabriel remained silent on the other end, but I could hear the heavy, rhythmic tapping of his pen against his desk—a habit he had whenever he was dissecting a case.
"He forged your signature on an institutional bank guarantee?" Gabriel's voice was deadly quiet. "That’s bank fraud, Hannah. That’s a federal offense carrying up to thirty years in prison. If we hand this to the SEC and the Department of Justice tomorrow, they’ll raid Vantage Global by the end of the week."
"No," I said firmly, surprising even myself with the cold resolve in my voice. "If the DOJ steps in right now, Nathan will hire high-priced criminal defense attorneys, the assets will be tied up in litigation for ten years, and he’ll use every legal loophole to drag out the divorce while I starve with Oliver. I don't just want him in jail, Gabriel. I want our lives back. I want every single dollar he stole from my pre-marital equity, and I want full, uncontested legal and physical custody of Oliver."
A slow, proud chuckle came through the receiver. "There she is. There’s the brilliant strategist I’ve missed for four years. What’s your plan, little sister?"
"We beat him at his own game," I explained, leaning closer to the phone. "Vantage Global's executive committee meets on the fifteenth of next month to vote on the Lumina Tech acquisition. Nathan believes he has the board completely under his thumb. But the controlling twenty percent stake in Vantage is held by an independent private equity fund called Sterling Vanguard."
"I know Sterling Vanguard," Gabriel said thoughtfully. "Their managing director, Marcus Vance, is an old client of mine. He despises reckless corporate executives."
"Marcus Vance doesn't know that Lumina Tech is an empty shell company because Nathan and Serena falsified the software licensing metrics," I said. "I’m going to prepare an anonymous, ironclad forensic audit of Lumina Tech under the pseudonym 'H.V. Sterling'. You’re going to deliver that report directly to Marcus Vance."
"And what happens to Nathan?"
"Marcus will let Nathan walk right into the board meeting, let him present his fraudulent numbers under oath, and then spring the trap in front of the entire executive board," I said. "By the time Nathan realizes what happened, I will have already cleared out of this house, filed for emergency custody, and frozen every single account tied to Aegis Horizon."

"Hannah," Gabriel said softly, his voice thick with emotion, "I am so sorry I didn't fight harder to pull you out of there sooner."
"You couldn't pull me out, Gabe," I replied, watching Oliver sleep peacefully in his crib. "I had to see the fire for myself before I was ready to walk through it. But I’m out now. And heaven help Nathan Whitaker when he realizes what’s coming."
