Chapter 4 - The Reception Speech That Turned into an Indictment

I walked into the center of the illuminated dance floor. Two hundred pairs of eyes locked onto me. The gasps were immediate. A bride who had shed her white gown for all-black attire was an unmistakable declaration of war.

Derek was standing near the DJ booth, looking slightly flushed from the alcohol. When he saw me, his jaw tightened in furious disbelief. He hurried toward me, his voice a harsh, suppressed hiss.

“What the hell are you doing, Claire? Where is your dress? Are you trying to make a scene?”

“I’m just giving everyone what they came for,” I said calmly, taking the wireless microphone from the stand before the DJ could react.

The room fell into dead silence. My parents were sitting at Table 1; my father was watching me with a calm, approving nod. He had known about the plan since 6:00 AM.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” my voice resonated clearly through the state-of-the-art surround sound speakers. “Thank you all for joining us tonight to celebrate what was supposed to be the beginning of a lifelong union.”

Derek reached for my arm, his fingers clamping down like a vice. “Shut up, Claire. Give me the mic,” he whispered, his eyes blazing with rage.

I didn’t flinch. I looked directly into the lens of the main wedding videographer, who was streaming the event live to our private family portal and over four hundred remote business partners.

“Derek just asked me to shut up,” I announced clearly into the microphone. A collective gasp rippled across the room. “Just like he told me to shut up three nights ago when he informed me that once we were married, I would have no choice but to obey him. Just like he told me it was ‘just a joke’ when he smashed cake across my face tonight to assert dominance in front of his colleagues.”

“Turn off the mic!” Derek bellowed toward the AV booth.

The AV tech didn't move. Instead, the giant 20-foot projection screens on either side of the stage flickered to life.

Instead of our romantic slideshow of beach vacations, the screens displayed high-resolution bank statements. Giant red circles highlighted wire transfers totaling $2.4 million from my father’s corporate development fund directly into an offshore account registered under the name D&V Holdings Ltd.

“What is this?” Derek stammered, his face turning an ashen shade of gray. “Turn that off! This is private!”

“Next slide, please,” I said calmly.

The screen shifted. Now, a lease agreement appeared for a multi-million-dollar penthouse in Miami, signed by Derek Sterling, with the occupant listed as Vanessa Thorne. Below that were time-stamped photographs taken just forty-eight hours ago: Derek kissing Vanessa passionately in the lobby of the Four Seasons hotel.

Patricia leaped out of her chair, spilling red wine across the white tablecloth. “This is slander! You crazy b***h! Turn those lies off!”

“It’s not slander, Patricia,” I said coldly, looking her dead in the eye. “It’s discovery.”
