Chapter 7 - The Fake Doctor with the Private Clinic

By morning, the media had caught wind of the story.

News vans with satellite dishes were parked three deep outside Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Headlines flashed across television screens worldwide:

"SUBURBAN CHICAGO HEIRESS FOUND ALIVE IN FUNERAL CASKET: PARENTS HELD IN $12M INSURANCE PLOT."

Inside Room 412, Chloe had finally opened her eyes without the ventilator tube. She was propped up against fluffy white pillows, holding a stuffed yellow duck I had bought from the hospital gift shop.

"Grandma?" she called in a tiny, sweet voice.

I rushed to her bedside, taking her small hand and kissing her knuckles. "I'm right here, my sweetheart. Grandma isn't going anywhere."

"Daddy and Victoria were bad, weren't they?" she whispered, her big brown eyes filling with tears. "Victoria gave me the bitter water in the silver cup. She told me if I made any noise when the box closed, the monsters in the dark would eat me."

My heart shattered, but my resolve hardened into pure titanium. "The monsters are gone, Chloe. The police took them away. They will never, ever hurt you again."

The door opened, and Detective Jenkins stepped inside, motioning for me to join her in the hallway.

"We found Dr. Arthur Sterling," Jenkins whispered urgently.

"Where?"

"A private airstrip in Gary, Indiana. He was boarding a twin-engine Cessna bound for the Bahamas. Our tactical units intercepted him on the runway."

"Did he talk?"

"He sang like a canary the second we mentioned federal conspiracy to commit capital murder," Jenkins smiled coldly. "Sterling wasn't just a rogue doctor. He runs an unlicensed underground surgical clinic that caters to wealthy criminals. He provided the Pentobarbital and neuromuscular blockers directly to Victoria. In exchange, Victoria transferred $500,000 in Bitcoin to his offshore wallet."

"Do you have the proof?"

"Sterling handed over his encrypted phone. It contains complete audio recordings of Victoria Vance detailing the exact timeline: the dose to give Chloe, the fake death certificate citing meningitis, and the instructions to the crematorium operator to burn the closed casket without opening the inspection latch."

"What about Julian?" I asked, my voice catching slightly on my son's name.

"Sterling had text messages from Julian asking: 'Can we make sure she feels no pain?' And Victoria texted back: 'Stop being a coward. The money fixes everything.'"
