Chapter 11 - The Grandmother's Stand in Family Court

While the criminal cases moved swiftly toward trial, the battle for Chloe’s future moved to Cook County Family Court.
Because both Julian and Victoria were incarcerated, Child Protective Services temporarily took legal guardianship of Chloe. Victoria’s estranged, wealthy relatives from New York attempted to intervene, filing for custody to gain control over the multi-million-dollar family trust funds that remained untouched.
I arrived at the family court hearing dressed in my finest navy suit, holding a worn photo album containing every picture of Chloe from the day she was born.
Victoria’s high-powered trust attorney stood before the bench. "Your Honor, Mrs. Evelyn Vance is a sixty-two-year-old widow living on a modest pension. The Brandt Family Trust can provide Chloe Vance with elite private boarding schools, twenty-four-hour private medical care, and world-class estates."
Judge Marianne Rossi listened patiently, then turned her gaze to me. "Mrs. Evelyn Vance, would you like to speak?"
I walked steadily to the podium.
"Your Honor," I began, my voice clear, strong, and unwavering. "Those people talk about millions of dollars and elite boarding schools. But it was millions of dollars that put my granddaughter inside a casket. It was wealth without a soul that tried to burn her alive."
The courtroom fell into absolute, pin-drop silence.
"Chloe doesn't need boarding schools or private trust managers," I continued, looking directly into Judge Rossi’s eyes. "Chloe needs a grandmother who will sit by her bed every night until she falls asleep without fear of the dark. She needs someone who will bake cookies with her, tend flowers with her, and remind her every single day that she is loved, cherished, and safe. I fought my way through splintered doors, rain, and gunfire to pull her from the grave. I will protect her with my life until my very last breath."

Judge Rossi wiped a tear from the corner of her eye, then slammed her gavel down with absolute finality.
"Sole, permanent, and irrevocable legal and physical custody of Chloe Vance is hereby awarded to Mrs. Evelyn Vance," Judge Rossi ruled. "All parental rights of Julian Vance and Victoria Helena Brandt are terminated immediately. The court further orders that the entire liquid assets of the Vance estate be placed in an untouchable, court-supervised trust fund exclusively for Chloe Vance’s medical, psychological, and educational welfare."
