Chapter 12 - The Accomplice Who Cracked Under Pressure

Two months later, the final nail was driven into the conspirators' legal coffin.
Carl Mendoza, the hired driver and muscle who had shot at me in the driveway, realized he was facing life without parole in federal maximum security. In exchange for a thirty-year sentence rather than life, Mendoza agreed to enter a full guilty plea and testify against both Victoria and Julian.
Mendoza provided the prosecution with the exact key to Victoria’s encrypted cloud server, unlocking video footage from the mansion's internal security cameras that Victoria had thought was permanently erased.
The footage was chilling.
It showed Victoria and Julian standing over the dining room table, mixing the liquid Pentobarbital into Chloe's bedtime hot chocolate.
It showed Julian hesitating, his hands shaking, before Victoria slapped him across the face and snarled: "Do you want to go to prison for ten years, or do you want fifteen million dollars on a beach in Monaco? Do it!"

It showed them carrying the limp, paralyzed child down the stairs, placing her into the casket, and locking the restraints while Chloe's eyelids weakly fluttered.
When Julian’s defense attorneys were shown this indisputable video evidence in the pretrial conference, all plea negotiations collapsed. Julian broke down in the conference room, sobbing uncontrollably, and signed a full confession to avoid the federal death penalty.
