Chapter 4 - The Frenzied Calls and the Unyielding Wall of Silence

Outside Terminal 4, the freezing morning wind whipped Eleanor’s carefully styled hair into a chaotic mess. Vanessa’s designer luggage sat stacked haphazardly on the dirty concrete curb while yellow cabs honked relentlessly in the pick-up lanes.

Richard was frantically redialing my phone number, his hands shaking with uncontrolled rage.

“The number you have dialed is currently unavailable or has been directed to voicemail.”

“He blocked me!” Richard roared, slamming his phone against his thigh. “The ungrateful little bastard actually blocked my number!”

“Try calling him from your phone, Vanessa!” Eleanor cried, wrapping her thin jacket around herself against the morning chill. “He wouldn’t dare block his own mother!”

Vanessa dialed. Voicemail.

Eleanor dialed. Voicemail.

Vanessa opened Instagram, aiming to send me a furious direct message, only to find that my profile no longer existed for her. I had blocked their numbers, restricted their social media access, and filtered all their personal emails directly into an archived legal folder.

Meanwhile, seventy miles away in our sunlit suburban home, the atmosphere could not have been more different.

Soft acoustic guitar music played through the hidden ceiling speakers. Clara was propped up comfortably on the plush living room sofa, wrapped in a cashmere blanket with her swollen feet resting on an ergonomic memory-foam pillow. A plate of fresh fruit, warm croissants, and herbal tea sat on the low table beside her.

I walked into the room carrying a warm heating pad and placed it gently behind her aching lower back.

“How is the pain this morning, sweetheart?” I asked softly, sitting on the edge of the couch and rubbing her shoulder.

Clara looked at me, a peaceful, radiant smile gracing her face. The tension and fear that had haunted her for weeks were visibly melting away. “The heating pad helps so much, Artie. But honestly... the house is so quiet. I haven’t felt this relaxed in months.”

She paused, looking down at my phone resting face-down on the coffee table.

“Did they... did they make it to Rome?” she asked cautiously.

I picked up the phone, unlocked it, and showed her my inbox. It contained eleven automated cancellation confirmations from Emirates, Seabourn Cruises, and luxury transport services across three European countries.

Clara’s jaw dropped. Her wide brown eyes stared at the screen in utter shock.

“Arthur... you canceled the entire vacation?”

“I told you last night,” I said, taking her hands in mine and looking directly into her eyes with total conviction. “The moment Vanessa threw that water in your face, and the moment my parents laughed at your pain, they severed every claim they had on my loyalty. They do not get to live in luxury financed by my sweat while treating my wife like garbage.”

“What are they going to do now?” Clara asked, half-anxious, half-relieved.

“They are about to discover what reality feels like,” I said calmly. “And I’m just getting started.”

At that exact moment, my private work phone buzzed. It was an incoming call from David Harrison, my senior corporate counsel and longtime personal attorney.

I pressed answer and put it on speaker.

“Good morning, David.”

“Arthur,” David’s sharp, analytical voice came through the speaker. “I received your midnight emergency directive. I have the complete asset portfolio for the Sterling Manor and your family’s auxiliary accounts ready for review. Are you sure you want to proceed with the full audit and asset reclamation?”

I looked at Clara, who was watching me with quiet, unwavering trust.

“Pull the entire curtain back, David,” I ordered without hesitation. “Every property, every vehicle lease, every corporate card, and every family trust allocation. If my name is on it, I want full legal control reclaimed by Monday morning.”

“Understood,” David replied. “You’re going to want to see what my forensic team just uncovered. It’s worse than you thought.”
