Chapter 2 - The Midnight Phone Call That Pulled the Plug on Their Luxury Lives

As I led Clara toward the front foyer, Vanessa shouted behind us, her voice dripping with mock sweetness: “Don't forget to have the driver pick us up at six sharp tomorrow morning, Artie! We don’t want to sit in terminal traffic!”
Richard chuckled from the dining room. “And make sure the yacht captain in Monaco knows I prefer single-malt Scotch in the cabin bar!”
I didn't answer. I didn't turn around. I opened the heavy oak front door, helped Clara into the passenger seat of my Mercedes SUV, turned the seat heater to maximum, and closed the door with a quiet, solid click.
As soon as I slid into the driver’s seat, I reached over and gently wiped the tears from Clara’s cold cheeks. She was trembling, holding her belly with both arms.
“Arthur... I’m so sorry,” Clara choked out, her voice breaking. “I didn’t mean to cause a scene. I know how important this anniversary trip was to you...”
“Stop,” I said, my voice thick with emotion. I leaned across the console and kissed her forehead. “Look at me, Clara. You did nothing wrong. Nothing. You are my wife. You are carrying our child. The way they treated you tonight is something I will never, ever forgive.”
“Are you okay?” she asked, looking at me with genuine concern despite what she had just endured. That was Clara—always worried about everyone else’s pain before her own.
“I have never been clearer in my life,” I replied.
I drove Clara straight home to our modern home in the hills—a property bought and paid for solely by my own company, completely separate from the family estate. I drew her a warm bath, made her hot chamomile tea, and stayed by her side until she finally drifted into an exhausted, deep sleep beneath three heavy duvets.
Once her breathing turned slow and steady, I stepped out onto the private balcony of our master bedroom. The cool midnight breeze rustled through the pine trees.
I pulled out my phone and dialed the dedicated 24/7 Centurion Concierge hotline.
“Good evening, Mr. Sterling,” a crisp, professional voice answered on the second ring. “How may American Express Black Concierge assist you tonight?”
“I need to make immediate, non-reversible cancellations on several reservations booked under my primary account,” I stated calmly.
“Of course, Mr. Sterling. Please provide the booking references.”
“First, the three First-Class roundtrip tickets from JFK to Rome on Emirates departing tomorrow at 8:15 AM for Richard Sterling, Eleanor Sterling, and Vanessa Sterling. Cancel them immediately.”
The concierge paused slightly. “Mr. Sterling, those are fully non-refundable at this hour unless converted into credit on your personal master account.”
“Convert the credit to my name only. Cancel their seats completely.”
“Understood. Next?”
“The Owner’s Penthouse Suite on the Seabourn Horizon departing from Civitavecchia on Sunday. Cancel it. The private helicopter transfers in Naples, the VIP villa rentals in Santorini, the yacht charter in Saint-Tropez, and the private chauffeur service scheduled for 6:00 AM tomorrow at the Sterling Manor. Cancel every single one of them. Do not notify the passengers. Send all cancellation receipts directly to my private encrypted email.”
“All reservations have been revoked, Mr. Sterling,” the representative confirmed after a few minutes of rapid keystrokes. “Is there anything else?”
“Yes,” I said, staring into the dark horizon. “I have four supplementary cards attached to my primary corporate Black Card account assigned to Richard, Eleanor, and Vanessa Sterling. Place an immediate fraud-level freeze on all three cards. Set their spending limits to zero dollars and zero cents, effective right now.”
“It is done, sir. All three supplementary cards are suspended.”
“Thank you. Have a good evening.”

I hung up the phone. I took a deep breath of the cold night air. For ten years, I had built a fortress of wealth and handed the keys to people who viewed my wife as an inconvenience and me as an automated teller machine.
Tomorrow morning, they were going to learn what their lives actually looked like without me.
