Chapter 13 - Vanessa Faces Real Life for the Very First Time

Two months later, winter had settled over upstate New York.
In a small, drafty diner on the outskirts of a working-class industrial town, the lunch rush was in full swing.
Vanessa Sterling was wearing a stained blue apron over a cheap cotton polo shirt, her hair tied back in an unstyled ponytail. Her once-flawless acrylic nails were clipped short and chipped from washing greasy dishes and carrying heavy trays of coffee and diner food.
For the first time in her thirty years of existence, Vanessa had an actual job.
“Table four needs more water, Vanessa! Move your feet!” the head cook barked from the kitchen pass-through.
“Coming!” Vanessa shouted back, grabbing a plastic pitcher of tap water.
She walked over to booth four, where a young mother was sitting with her toddler. As Vanessa poured the water into the glasses, her hands shook with physical exhaustion from standing on her feet for an eight-hour minimum-wage shift.
Her mind involuntarily flashed back to that fateful Friday evening in the dining room.
She remembered the feeling of the crystal goblet in her hand. She remembered the smug satisfaction she had felt when she hurled the freezing water across the table into Clara’s pregnant chest. She remembered how she had laughed, believing she was untouchable, believing Arthur would always fund her lavish life no matter how cruel she was.
Now, she lived in a damp, freezing two-bedroom basement with her aging parents, who bickered constantly from morning until night. Every dollar she earned at the diner went directly to court-mandated restitution payments to avoid a felony record.
None of her old society friends ever called. When she tried to message them, she found herself blocked across every platform. To the world she had desperately tried to impress, she was simply a ghost who had vanished overnight.
During her fifteen-minute afternoon break, Vanessa sat on an upturned milk crate in the snowy alleyway behind the diner. She pulled out her cracked secondhand phone and opened a public news article on a regional business website.
The headline read:
STERLING LOGISTICS EXPANDS INTO GREEN ENERGY SECTOR WITH RECORD $500M VALUATION; CEO ARTHUR STERLING DEDICATES NEW PEDIATRIC HEALTH CENTER IN WIFE’S HONOR.
Beneath the headline was a stunning photograph.
Arthur was standing on a sunlit stage, looking powerful, healthy, and happy in a tailored navy suit. Beside him was Clara, looking radiant and glowing in an elegant emerald dress, smiling warmly at the camera.
Vanessa stared at the photo. Tears welled up in her eyes and dripped down her cold, tired cheeks.
She realized with devastating certainty that Clara had never been weak. Clara had the strength of character, kindness, and love that had earned Arthur’s total devotion.
