Chapter 8 - The Nanny Who Knew Too Much

By noon on Monday, Julian Sterling had arrived at the Grant residence with two junior associates and a forensic digital investigator named David.

Julian, a sharp-featured man in his late fifties with silver hair and a tailored charcoal three-piece suit, sat across from Graham at the kitchen island, reviewing the mountain of documents Graham had compiled over the weekend.

"The signature on the Oakridge intake form is a high-grade digital auto-pen forgery," Julian said, tapping a magnifying glass against the paper. "It was lifted directly from the municipal zoning application you signed for the pool house back in April. Sloane had access to your digital signature key on your office server."

"That constitutes grand forgery and fraudulent procurement of custody documents," Graham said.

"It does," Julian agreed. "But family court judges are notoriously unpredictable when elite families start slinging mud. Croft is right about one thing: if they bring five paid witnesses claiming you were an unstable father, they can tie you up in custody evaluations for eighteen months. We need incontrovertible proof of premeditation and physical endangerment."

Graham leaned forward. "Maisie told me Sloane was putting 'bitter drops' in her juice every night. Who was administering them?"

"What about the nanny Sloane hired four months ago?" Julian asked. "Clara Martinez?"

"Sloane fired Clara three weeks ago," Graham realized, his eyes narrowing. "She told me Clara was caught stealing silverware from the dining room. I didn't question it—I just let Sloane replace her with an agency temp."

"Find Clara," Julian told his junior associate immediately. "Offer her immunity, offer her protection, offer her whatever it takes to get her on the record."

It took the investigative team three hours to track down Clara Martinez to a small apartment in Queens. By 4:00 PM, Clara was sitting in Julian Sterling’s conference room, her hands trembling around a paper cup of water, weeping with relief.

"Mr. Grant, I swear on my mother’s soul I never stole anything," Clara sobbed in broken English. "Miss Vance framed me! She put the silver forks in my purse because I found the bottle in her bathroom vanity!"

Graham knelt beside Clara’s chair. "What bottle, Clara? Tell me everything."

"Liquid Chloral Hydrate and Clonidine," Clara said, pulling out her smartphone with trembling fingers. "I took photos of the prescription labels before she threw me out. They weren't prescribed to Maisie. They were prescribed to Miss Vance under a false alias from a private clinic in New Jersey! Miss Vance ordered me to put five drops in Maisie’s chamomile tea every afternoon at four o'clock. She said the doctor ordered it for Maisie’s 'hyperactivity.' When I told her Maisie was acting like a zombie and couldn't walk straight, Miss Vance slapped me and threatened to call immigration on my brother!"

Julian looked at Graham, his eyes gleaming with grim triumph. "Administering a controlled sedative to an unprescribed minor without parental consent. That isn't just a civil custody violation, Graham."

"That's felony child endangerment and aggravated assault on a minor," Graham finished.

"And I have the text messages," Clara added, unlocking her phone. "Miss Vance texted me every day: 'Did you give the girl her drops? Make sure she is asleep before Graham gets home from the office.'"
