Chapter 14 - Picking Up the Broken Pieces

Six months later, the Grant estate had transformed from a house of heavy shadows into a home filled with sunlight and laughter.

Graham had fundamentally restructured his life. He stepped down as chief executive of his asset management firm, appointing his trusted managing director to run daily operations while he transitioned into a chairman role that allowed him to work from home four days a week.

Every morning at 7:30 AM, Graham walked Maisie to the front steps of her kindergarten class. He stood at the gate until she turned around, waved her small hand, and disappeared inside with her friends. Every afternoon at 3:00 PM, he was waiting at the same gate, holding an apple juice box and a sketchbook.

Maisie’s pediatrician confirmed that all traces of the illicit sedatives had completely cleared her system within weeks of Sloane’s arrest. With the help of a dedicated child psychologist who specialized in trauma recovery, Maisie’s nightmares gradually faded, replaced by stories of adventures she wanted to take with her father.

One crisp autumn afternoon, Graham and Maisie drove up to a quiet cemetery overlooking the Hudson River.

They walked hand-in-hand through the golden oak leaves until they reached Elena’s headstone. Maisie carefully set down a bouquet of wild yellow daisies she had picked from their garden.

Graham looked at the marble stone, feeling the first true sense of peace he had experienced since Elena’s passing.

"We’re okay, Elena," Graham whispered silently. "I almost lost her, but I’ve got her now. I will always protect her."

Maisie looked up at Graham, tugging on his sleeve. "Daddy? Can we make apple pie tonight like Mommy used to do?"

Graham smiled down at his daughter, the last traces of grief giving way to warmth and gratitude. "We can make two of them, baby. One for us, and one for Aunt Clara."
