Chapter 15 - The Vow That Truly Mattered

One year after the wedding that never happened, Graham stood on the wooden deck of a modest beach cottage in Cape May, New Jersey.

There were no two hundred guests in designer gowns. There were no corporate investors, no photographers, no string quartets, and no expensive imported satin.

There was only the sound of crashing ocean waves, the smell of salt water, and the warm breeze carrying the scent of roasting marshmallows from the fire pit below.

Elena’s sister, Clara, was sitting on a beach chair, laughing as Maisie sprinted across the sand, chasing seagulls with a stick while Barnaby the rabbit sat safely wrapped in a towel on a picnic table.

Graham walked down the wooden steps, the soft sand sinking beneath his bare feet. He wore a simple linen shirt and khaki shorts—a world away from the tuxedo he had worn in the dim foyer of St. Jude Parish.

Maisie saw him and ran full speed into his legs, wrapping her arms around his knees and giggling breathlessly.

"Daddy! Look! I found three smooth shells for Mommy’s shelf!"

Graham scooped her up into his arms, holding her high against the backdrop of the orange-and-purple sunset.

He remembered the cold iron chain that had once bound her ankle to that heavy coat rack. He remembered the forged signatures, the greed, the cruelty, and the web of lies that had almost cost him everything that mattered in this world.

All of that was gone now. Sloane Vance was currently serving a twenty-two-year sentence in a federal correctional facility in West Virginia, her name erased from society, her assets seized, her power broken forever.

Graham kissed Maisie’s forehead, feeling the steady, healthy rhythm of her heartbeat against his chest.

"They're beautiful shells, Maisie," Graham said softly, looking into the bright, sparkling brown eyes that matched Elena's perfectly.

"Daddy?" Maisie asked, wrapping her small arms around his neck and resting her chin on his shoulder. "Are we going to be together forever and ever?"

Graham tightened his hold, his voice steady with the only promise that would ever truly matter for the rest of his days.

"Forever and ever, sweet girl. I promise."

And as the sun dipped beneath the ocean horizon, casting a long golden road across the water, Graham Grant walked along the shore with his daughter in his arms—safe, whole, and finally free.
