Chapter 5 - Terminal Panic at JFK International

Before the news of Madison and Ryan’s secondary apprehension broke to the press, the legal machine of Whitmore Group moved with relentless, crushing efficiency.
Inside the executive boardroom at Whitmore Tower, my team was executing a corporate purge of historic proportions. Every single department head who had received unverified bonuses signed by Ryan over the past twelve months was summoned to the legal annex on the 46th floor.
"Claire," my CFO Thomas Hayes reported, placing a stack of termination letters before me. "The regional managers in London, Rotterdam, and Hamburg have all capitulated. The moment they realized the Swiss wire transfer failed, they handed over all private correspondence with Ryan. It turns out Ryan promised them equity stakes in his Cayman LLC in exchange for falsifying freight delivery manifests."
"Offer them full cooperation agreements with the Department of Justice," I instructed calmly, signing each administrative authorization with my mother's vintage fountain pen. "If they surrender their digital correspondence and testify against Ryan before the federal grand jury, Whitmore Group will not pursue civil damages against their personal estates. If they hesitate for even an hour, file immediate multi-million-dollar lawsuits in their respective jurisdictions."
"Understood," Thomas said, nodding with newfound respect.
For years, many of these board members had viewed me as the quiet daughter of an iron-willed matriarch. They had assumed that my soft-spoken nature was a sign of executive weakness. But in the span of six hours, I had dismantled a multi-continental conspiracy without raising my voice once.
Arthur Vance walked into the room, carrying a fresh cup of tea. He placed it gently beside me. "Real Earl Grey, Claire. Made by my own hands."
I smiled faintly. "Thank you, Arthur."
"The federal judge in Lower Manhattan has just revoked Ryan’s bail," Arthur said, taking a seat across from me. "When Agent Bradley presented the evidence of the synthetic jewelry tracking beacon, along with the toxicology report on the residue from your bedroom tea mug, Judge Holbrook deemed Ryan an extreme flight risk and an imminent danger. He is being transferred to the Metropolitan Correctional Center."
"And Madison?"
"Madison is singing like a canary," Arthur said with a dry chuckle. "The moment she realized she was facing fifteen years for federal wire fraud, she gave up the encrypted passwords to Ryan’s private offshore servers. Our technical team has already recovered thirty-eight million of the forty-two million dollars he siphoned. The remaining four million was spent on luxury real estate, sports cars, and private yacht charters in the Mediterranean."
"Then we seize the real estate, the cars, and the yachts," I said coldly. "Every single asset acquired with Whitmore capital will be auctioned off at public foreclosure. I want Ryan to see every brick of his fabricated vanity sold off to satisfy his restitution."
"Claire," Arthur said softly, his expression turning solemn. "There is one more matter. Ryan’s personal defense attorney has reached out. Ryan is begging for an in-person meeting with you at the federal holding facility. He claims he has information about your mother's European holdings that you don't know about."
I looked out the panoramic window overlooking the bustling streets of Manhattan below. Yellow cabs moved like tiny golden ants along the asphalt avenues, people hurried to their offices, and the world continued its indifferent march forward.
"Ryan has nothing left to bargain with," I replied. "He is drowning, Arthur, and he thinks he can pull me into the dark with him. But I will go see him."
May you like
Arthur frowned slightly. "Why put yourself through that emotional strain?"
"Because," I said, standing up and buttoning my charcoal blazer, "a ghost only holds power over you if you refuse to look it directly in the eye. I want Ryan Vance to look at me and understand that the woman he tried to destroy was the only person keeping him from his own ruin."
