Chapter 13 - The Public Auction of the Montgomery Manor

The sprawling twenty-acre Montgomery estate in Greenwich was seized by federal marshals and placed on the public auction block to satisfy the remaining tax liens and creditor judgments.
On a crisp spring morning, I stood on the back lawn of the estate, watching as wealthy buyers from across the country bid on the antique furniture, the crystal chandeliers, and the oil paintings that Victor had accumulated through years of fraud.
Daniel walked up beside me, placing a warm cup of coffee into my hand.
“Did you place a bid on the house?” he asked with a faint smile.
“I did,” I replied.
“And what are we going to do with a twenty-acre estate in Greenwich, Mrs. Reyes?”

“We’re going to tear down the ornamental fountain in the garden,” I said, looking out over the stone terrace where my life had changed forever. “And we’re going to donate the land to the State of Connecticut as a permanent public park and botanical garden for children.”
Daniel pulled me into his arms, kissing the top of my head. “A perfect ending for an ugly piece of stone.”
