Chapter 12 - The Verdict and the Miracle

Two weeks after the sentencing, on a crisp morning in early April, my water broke.
I was at Arthur’s estate, sitting in the newly renovated sunroom overlooking the blooming cherry blossoms.
There was no panic. Arthur called the private medical transport, and within twenty minutes, I was admitted to the labor and delivery wing at Greenwich Hospital—the very hospital where I had worked as a nurse for years.
My former colleagues were by my side every step of the way.
At 4:17 PM on April 14th, my daughter entered the world with a fierce, healthy cry.
Seven pounds, eight ounces.
Dark hair and bright, curious eyes.
Arthur stood in the corner of the recovery room, dabbing his eyes with a handkerchief as the nurse placed the baby in my arms.
“What is her name?” Arthur asked softly.
I looked down at her beautiful, perfect face, feeling a wave of peace that washed away every trace of the nightmare we had survived.
“Her name is Clara,” I said. “Clara Hope.”
