Chapter 9 - Whispers Among the Roses

The aftermath of the gala was an intoxicating whirlwind.

With Graham’s public arrest and the unsealing of the federal indictment, the city’s real estate board officially revoked Vale Holdings’ developer license. The municipal court judge voided the fraudulent deed transfer with prejudice, restoring Bellamy Blooms to my name with clear, unencumbered title.

Two days after the gala, Vance arrived at the shop just as the sun was setting behind the brick row houses of South Boston.

The shop was warm, scented with fresh eucalyptus and the damp earth of potted hydrangeas. Vance had shed his formal coat and stood beside the long wooden worktable where I was arranging a bouquet of blush-pink peonies.

“You’ve been quiet today,” he said, leaning his hip against the table.

“I’m just getting used to the silence,” I replied, carefully trimming a leaf. “For two weeks, my life felt like a hurricane. Now the storm has passed, and I’m back where I started.”

“You are not back where you started,” Vance said softly.

He reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing against mine as he took the floral shears from my hand and set them down on the wooden bench.

“You saved my sister from a life of calculated manipulation, June. You saved this entire historic district from being carved up by vultures. And you created the most stunning botanical installation this city has seen in twenty years.”

“Your resources made that happen, Vance,” I said, looking up into his dark, searching eyes.

“Resources build buildings, June. Soul builds a life.” He stepped closer, his presence commanding yet remarkably gentle. “When I stood in that ballroom on the worst day of your life, I didn't see someone who needed saving. I saw someone who possessed the kind of strength I’ve spent my entire life looking for.”

My heart skipped a beat. “Vance... we come from two completely different worlds. You run a global empire. I run a flower shop in South Boston.”

“Then let the worlds collide,” Vance whispered.

He lifted his hand, cupping my cheek with tender reverence, and leaned down.

When his lips met mine, there was no deception, no hurried promises, and no hidden agendas. There was only the honest, grounding warmth of a man who saw me completely and chose to stay.
