Chapter 10 - Graham’s Desperate Retaliation

Desperation makes dangerous men reckless.

On the Thursday before Graham’s formal arraignment, he was released on a temporary two-million-dollar bail secured by his mother’s remaining liquid assets. Instead of awaiting trial, Graham made one final, catastrophic gamble.

At 2:00 AM, the alarm at Bellamy Blooms shrieked through the quiet neighborhood.

I was asleep in the small second-floor apartment above the shop when the sound of shattering glass tore me from my bed. Smelling the sharp, acrid stench of gasoline, I threw on a robe and grabbed my phone to dial 911.

As I reached the top of the interior wooden stairs, I saw Graham standing in the center of the showroom, holding an iron crowbar and a red plastic fuel canister.

He had smashed the glass display cases, overturned the flower buckets, and poured gasoline across the wooden floorboards my mother had laid thirty years ago.

“If I can’t have this land, nobody will!” Graham screamed, his eyes wild and bloodshot, holding a brass lighter aloft. “You ruined me, June! You and Sterling took everything!”

“Graham, stop!” I shouted, descending three steps, keeping my voice steady despite the terror hammering in my chest. “There are residential apartments on both sides of this building! You’ll kill innocent families!”

“I don't care!” he snarled, flicking the wheel of the lighter. A small yellow flame sprang to life.

Before he could drop it, the front glass doors blew inward with concussive force.

Vance Sterling tackled Graham across the counter, slamming the crowbar from his grip and pinning his wrist against the hardwood floor. The lighter flew across the room, landing harmlessly in a metal bucket of water.

Two private security guards rushed in right behind Vance, disarming Graham and pinning him to the floor with practiced military efficiency.

Vance stood up, his breathing heavy, his knuckles bruised, but his eyes locked entirely on me.

“June! Are you hurt?”

I ran down the remaining stairs and threw my arms around his neck, burying my face in his shoulder. He held me so tightly I could feel the rapid beat of his heart against my cheek.

“I’m okay,” I whispered, trembling. “I’m okay. How did you know?”

“I had round-the-clock security watching this block the moment his bail cleared,” Vance murmured into my hair. “I will never let anyone hurt you again. Never.”

Police sirens wailed in the near distance, their red and blue lights flashing across the shattered glass and wet flower petals of the shop.

This time, Graham didn't shout. He lay on the floor in handcuffs, broken, ruined, and facing attempted murder and first-degree arson charges with zero possibility of bail.
