Chapter 14 - Reclaiming My True Name

Six months later.

The summer sun poured through the massive windows of the newly expanded headquarters of Bennett & Vance International Compliance in the heart of Chicago.

Following the high-profile unraveling of Halcyon Dynamics’ procurement scandal, our firm had become one of the most sought-after corporate integrity consultancies in the country. Fortune 500 boards, international aerospace conglomerates, and regulatory agencies queued for our forensic oversight services.

I stood in my new corner office, holding a glass of iced lemon water, looking out at the glittering waters of Lake Michigan.

On my desk sat the finalized divorce decree, signed and sealed by the court. Along with it was the official court order restoring my legal name permanently: Clara Bennett.

A gentle knock sounded at the door. Marcus Vance stepped inside, carrying a leather-bound folder.

“Morning, Boss,” Marcus smiled, setting the folder down. “The Halcyon restructuring is officially complete. Arthur Sterling and the newly appointed board just signed off on our three-year compliance oversight contract.”

“And Daniel Cross?” I asked.

“Sentenced this morning,” Marcus replied. “He received three years with credit for full cooperation. He avoided the twenty-year maximum because he handed over Richard’s contingency files.”

“And Richard?”

Marcus took a breath, his expression turning solemn. “The plea deal fell through. Richard refused to admit guilt until the very last second. He was sentenced to fourteen years at the federal correctional facility in Terre Haute. All of his remaining assets were seized for restitution to the Department of Defense. He has nothing left.”

I nodded slowly, feeling no malice, no anger—only a profound, peaceful sense of closure. Richard had made his choices, driven by arrogance and unchecked vanity, and the law had delivered its final balance.
