Chapter 11 - Face to Face With the Real Clara

The heavy double doors of Boardroom Alpha swung open.

Richard walked inside, his legs feeling like lead. The room was breathtakingly vast, surrounded by panoramic glass overlooking Lake Michigan. Seated around the massive mahogany table were all eleven members of Halcyon Dynamics’ Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer, the General Counsel, and two senior prosecutors from the Department of Justice.

In the corner, sitting with his head buried in his hands, was Daniel Cross.

At the head of the table sat Arthur Sterling.

And sitting directly to Arthur’s right, in the seat reserved for the Special Chief Legal Counsel, was me.

I was wearing a sharp, tailored charcoal power suit, my hair pulled back into an immaculate chignon. In front of me was a stack of open forensic dossiers bearing the gold-embossed seal of Vance & Sterling Legal & Compliance.

Richard stopped dead in his tracks. He stared at me, his eyes bulging, his mouth hanging open in sheer, unadulterated shock.

“Clara?” Richard choked out, pointing a trembling finger at me. “What... what are you doing here? Why are you sitting in that chair? Arthur, what is my wife doing in an executive board meeting?”

Arthur Sterling stood up slowly, his voice echoing with deep, thunderous authority.

“Your wife is not here as your spouse, Richard,” Arthur said, his eyes cold with contempt. “She is here as Managing Partner Clara Bennett of Vance & Sterling—the lead investigator hired by this Board three weeks ago to uncover the massive fraud you’ve been committing against this corporation.”

Richard stumbled back half a step, the world spinning beneath his feet. “Bennett? No... no! That’s impossible! She’s been out of law for years! She’s an unemployed homemaker! She lives off my salary!”

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the polished table, interlacing my fingers, and meeting his wild, unhinged gaze with absolute serenity.

“I never left corporate compliance, Richard,” I said, my voice cutting through the silent room like a razor. “I simply stopped arguing with insecure men in courtrooms and started auditing them from behind the scenes. And over the last three weeks, my team has uncovered every single cent you stole from Halcyon Dynamics.”
