Chapter 8 - The Hidden Micro-Cameras Catch Wendy in Her True Element

At 8:45 AM, the main house appeared completely serene from the outside. The autumn morning fog rolled across the lawns, and the sweet aroma of freshly brewed Colombian coffee drifted through the kitchen.
To any outside observer, the Sterling household was operating with picturesque domestic perfection.
In reality, the estate had been transformed into an impenetrable, military-grade surveillance fortress. Over the past six hours, Marcus’s technical specialists had installed twelve pinhole micro-cameras with 4K facial recognition and directional laser microphones throughout the ground floor, the kitchen pantry, and the master suite.
Down in the basement command bunker, Marcus sat surrounded by six glowing high-definition monitors, watching every angle of the property in real-time.
On Monitor 2, the front door of the guest cottage opened.
Wendy stepped out onto the gravel path. She was dressed in an elegant dark emerald dress, carrying a small leather medical pouch inside her wicker handbag. Her face was calm, relaxed, and utterly chilling in its lack of human emotion.
"Target is on the move," Marcus’s voice crackled through my concealed wireless earpiece. "She’s crossing the courtyard now. Mr. Sterling, Mrs. Sterling is seated at the kitchen island as planned."
I was sitting in my second-story study, looking down at the split-screen monitor on my desk.
On Monitor 1, Jessi sat holding a warm mug of chamomile tea. She was pale, her fingers trembling slightly against the porcelain, but her jaw was set with remarkable, fierce composure. An hour earlier, I had sat beside her on our bed and revealed the bare framework of Wendy’s treachery: the fake medical visits, the secret warehouse, and the plot to strip Fiona from our custody. I had withheld the detail about Julian’s physical survival for the final confrontation, wanting to protect her nervous system until the federal agents were in position.
Jessi took a slow, deep breath, smoothing her sweater as the back door opened.
"Good morning, my sweet girl!" Wendy sang out, gliding into the kitchen with an exuberant smile that looked entirely authentic. "My, what a dreary, chilly morning. How are you feeling, darling? You look so terribly pale."
Jessi looked up, forcing a faint, weary smile that played perfectly into Wendy’s expectations. "Just... a terrible headache, Mother. I didn't sleep well at all. Mark is working in his study, and the stress of his corporate merger is making the whole house feel tense."
Wendy’s eyes gleamed with predatory satisfaction. She set her wicker handbag on the marble island, pulled out a porcelain teapot, and began bustling around the stove with practiced domestic familiarity.
"Oh, I know, darling. Mark is a driven man, but he simply doesn't understand the emotional toll he takes on you," Wendy said, her back turned to Jessi as she opened the pantry cabinet. "You’ve always been so sensitive, Jessi. Just like you were after Julian’s accident. A mother knows these things."
On Monitor 3, Marcus zoomed the camera in on Wendy’s hands inside the open pantry.
With her back obscuring Jessi’s view, Wendy reached into her leather medical pouch. She pulled out a small amber glass dropper bottle with no commercial label. Using her thumb, she unstopped the dropper and squeezed six clear, viscous drops directly into a ceramic mug of herbal tea she was preparing for Jessi.
Down in the basement bunker, our forensic technician immediately matched the visual viscosity of the liquid against the mass-spectrometry database.
"Liquid compound verified," the technician whispered into the audio feed. "High-concentration synthetic digitalis mixed with concentrated liquid lorazepam. It induces acute cardiac arrhythmia within forty minutes, mimicking a natural heart failure accelerated by anxiety medication. It's completely lethal in that dosage."
A wave of cold, murderous fury washed over me, but I kept my voice perfectly flat into the microphone. "Marcus, confirm federal teams are locked on the perimeter."
"FBI Tactical Team Alpha is staged two hundred yards outside the main gates in two unmarked delivery vans," Marcus confirmed. "Team Bravo has surrounded the Bridgeport industrial bunker. We have complete perimeter containment."
In the kitchen, Wendy stirred the poisoned tea with a small silver spoon, the metal clinking innocently against the ceramic rim. She turned around, carrying the steaming mug in both hands with a look of overwhelming maternal tenderness.
"Here, sweetheart," Wendy cooed, setting the poisoned mug directly in front of Jessi. "Drink this down while it’s hot. It’s a special organic herbal blend I picked up in Stamford. It will soothe your nerves and help you slip into a nice, deep, peaceful sleep."
Jessi looked down at the dark amber liquid.
Through the micro-camera, I could see the subtle pulse jumping in Jessi’s throat. She knew what this woman had tried to do to Fiona, and now she was looking at the instrument of her own intended execution.
Jessi reached out, her fingers wrapping around the warm ceramic handle.
"Drink it all, darling," Wendy urged softly, leaning over the counter, her eyes fixed on the cup with sickening, hungry anticipation. "Every last drop. You won't have to worry about a single thing ever again."
May you like
Jessi slowly lifted the mug toward her lips.
"Now," I whispered into the radio.
