Chapter 12 - The Staged Boardroom Crisis That Lured the Predators Out

Outside the French doors, the gravel driveway crunched under the heavy tires of two black federal utility vehicles.
Special Agent David Vance (no relation to Julian) and three plainclothes investigators from the FBI Financial Crimes Task Force walked into the kitchen, carrying evidence collection kits and a signed federal arrest warrant.
Agent Vance presented the warrant to Wendy, who was still trembling on the floor.
"Wendy Montgomery," Agent Vance stated with icy professionalism. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, falsification of biological records, child endangerment, and attempted first-degree murder."
Marcus stepped forward, handing the FBI team the sealed evidence bag containing the ceramic mug of digitalis-laced tea, along with the 4K video recording of Wendy putting the poison into the cup.
"We have pristine chain of custody on the chemical weapon, Agent Vance," Marcus reported. "Audio, video, and mass-spectrometry verified."
As the federal agents hoisted Wendy to her feet and snapped the cold steel handcuffs around her wrists, she began thrashing and screaming like a cornered animal.
"Let go of me! You have no right!" Wendy shrieked, her face turning an ugly, mottled crimson as she glared at me. "Mark Sterling, I will destroy you! I have friends on the state appellate bench! I have offshore trusts you'll never find! You think you’ve won?! You’re nothing but a pathetic rail-worker's son!"
"Take her out," I said quietly, without even looking at her.
The agents dragged Wendy through the foyer and out into the rain. The heavy front door slammed shut, and for the first time in six months, the air inside our home felt clean, pure, and safe.
Jessi collapsed into my arms, burying her face into the crook of my neck. Her whole body shook with deep, cathartic sobs as six years of buried grief and tension finally washed out of her soul.
I held her tightly, kissing her hair, letting her weep until the trembling stopped.
"It's over, Jessi," I whispered into her ear. "They will never touch this house again. They will never speak Fiona’s name again. You are safe. Our baby is safe."
"Daddy?" a tiny voice called from the top of the grand staircase.
We both turned.
Fiona stood on the upper landing, wearing her favorite flannel panda pajamas, clutching her stuffed rabbit. Maria stood beside her, smiling through tears of relief.
Fiona looked down at the empty foyer, seeing the quiet morning light pouring through the windows, sensing that the dark shadow that had hovered over our house was finally gone.
"Is the secret place gone, Daddy?" Fiona asked softly.

I walked up the stairs, scooped my daughter into my arms, and held her against my chest while Jessi joined us, wrapping her arms around both of us on the landing.
"The secret place is gone forever, baby," I told her, kissing her cheek. "From now on, there are no secrets in this family. Only love, and only truth."
