Chapter 11 - The Counter-Offensive Begins with Federal Agents in the Wings

On the high-definition monitor, a live tactical feed from the Bridgeport industrial compound flickered to life.

Rain was pouring over the rusted corrugated roofs of the abandoned freight park. Surrounding the windowless red-brick bunker were four armored tactical BearCat vehicles from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's New Haven Field Office, accompanied by twelve heavily armed SWAT operators in full tactical gear and Connecticut State Police cruisers blocking every escape route.

Through the directional microphone on our feed, a booming amplified voice echoed across the asphalt:

"JULIAN VANCE. THIS IS THE FBI. THE BUILDING IS SURROUNDED. COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS RAISED IMMEDIATELY."

Inside the kitchen, Wendy stared at the screen in utter, paralyzed disbelief. Her hands shook violently as she reached into her pocket, pulled out a cheap burner phone, and frantically dialed Julian's number.

On the monitor, through a thermal imaging camera mounted on a tactical drone, we could see Julian Vance pacing frantically inside the bunker office. He was screaming into his phone, kicking over metal chairs, and shoving stacks of counterfeit identity documents into a burning metal trash can.

Julian answered Wendy’s call on speakerphone. His voice blasted through the kitchen, raw with panicked, hysterical rage:

"WENDY! YOU STUPID OLD BITCH, WHAT DID YOU DO?!"

Wendy flinched as if she had been struck. "Julian! What is happening?! Mark says the Swiss trust was denied!"

"THEY DIDN'T JUST DENY IT, THEY FROZE EVERYTHING!" Julian screamed, gunfire simulators crackling in the background as tactical flashbangs began detonating around the bunker perimeter. "THE FEDS ARE OUTSIDE! THEY KNOW ABOUT THE 2016 CORONER, THEY KNOW ABOUT THE BELIZE WIRE TRANSFERS, THEY KNOW EVERYTHING! THEY HAVE A FEDERAL ARREST WARRANT FOR CONSPIRACY, WIRE FRAUD, AND ATTEMPTED EXTORTION!"

"Julian, get out through the south drainage tunnel!" Wendy shrieked, clutching the phone with both hands. "Take the cash in the wall safe and run!"

"THE TUNNEL IS BLOCKED!" Julian roared, his voice breaking in sheer terror. "THERE ARE SIX SWAT OPERATORS WAITING AT THE EXIT! YOU PROMISED ME THIS WAS FOOLPROOF! YOU SAID STERLING WAS A CLUELESS IDIOT WHO WOULD NEVER NOTICE! YOU RUINED MY LIFE!"

The heavy thud of a hydraulic breaching ram smashing through the bunker’s steel door reverberated through the phone line.

"FBI! ON THE GROUND! DROP THE WEAPON! DOWN ON THE GROUND NOW!"

A loud clatter echoed as Julian dropped his burner phone onto the concrete. Through the thermal feed on our monitor, we watched four federal operators pin Julian Vance to the floor, twist his arms behind his back, and ratchet heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

The ghost of Julian Vance was officially in federal custody.

The phone call clicked dead.

In our Greenwich kitchen, a suffocating silence descended.

Wendy stood frozen against the cabinetry, her phone slipping from her numb fingers and shattering onto the marble floor. Her grand seventy-million-dollar empire of deceit, manipulation, and murder had completely disintegrated in less than ten minutes.

She slowly turned her head toward Jessi, her eyes welling with desperate, crocodile tears.

"Jessi... darling..." Wendy whimpered, falling to her knees on the kitchen floor and crawling toward her daughter's feet. "You have to help me... I'm your mother! I was only trying to protect your future! You can't let them send me to prison! Tell Mark to drop the charges! Please, Jessi, I gave you life!"

May you like

Jessi stood up from the barstool. She looked down at the pathetic, weeping woman on the floor—the woman who had terrorized her daughter, poisoned her tea, and tried to steal her family.

"You didn't give me life, Wendy," Jessi said, her voice freezing the air in the room. "You gave me eight years of nightmares. And today, I'm waking up."
