Chapter 4 - When a Ghost Soldier Goes to War Against an Entire Corrupt Dynasty

By 5:00 AM, I had established an operational base in a rented cabin deep in the Lincoln National Forest, thirty miles outside San Jeronimo’s municipal boundaries. The cabin was completely off-grid, powered by a silent solar-battery bank and equipped with satellite communication uplinks running through encrypted Nordic VPN tunnels.

I sat at the wooden table with my laptop, surrounded by three monitors displaying property deeds, tax filings, corporate registries, and the recovered surveillance footage.

I dialed an encrypted satellite frequency.

The line connected after two rings. “Talk to me, Mark.”

The voice belonged to Caleb Vance—no relation to Arthur Vance. Caleb was my former Master Sergeant and intelligence specialist, a man who now operated one of the most sophisticated private cyber-forensics firms in Washington, D.C. He was the godfather Maya had never gotten to see enough of.

“Caleb, I need an emergency digital fortress,” I said without preamble. “I have raw 4K video evidence, forensic photo logs, and recorded admissions of a Class A felony involving the Vance family.”

“Send the payload through the Black-Box server,” Caleb replied instantly, his keyboard already clicking in the background. “What are we looking at?”

“Attempted murder of a minor, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, witness tampering, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy under color of authority involving the Chief of Police.”

Caleb went completely silent for five seconds. When he spoke again, all warmth had drained from his voice. “Maya?”

“Yes.”

“Upload the files now. I’m splitting the hash keys across six independent offshore servers in Zurich, Reykjavik, and Singapore. The moment those keys are verified, not even a presidential executive order will be able to delete that footage from the global web.”

“I don't just want them arrested, Caleb,” I said, looking out the cabin window at the rising red sun over the pines. “If they get arrested today, Arthur’s pet judge grants them bail tomorrow morning, the evidence mysteriously gets lost in the county clerk’s office, and Ross and Ethan fly out on a private jet to a non-extradition country. I want their entire foundation dismantled. I want every corrupt official on Arthur’s payroll exposed, every bank account frozen, and every single person who enabled this behind bars for the rest of their lives.”

“Then we don't play by county rules,” Caleb said, his voice dropping into tactical execution mode. “We use the RICO statute. Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. If we can prove that Arthur Vance used his commercial enterprises—Vance Logistics, Vance Timber, and his private equity shell companies—to bribe law enforcement, launder illegal funds, and systematically suppress criminal investigations, the case moves out of the county, out of the state, and directly onto the desk of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice.”

“Where do we start?”

“Arthur’s private logistics firm,” Caleb said. “Vance Logistics moves eighty percent of all regional commercial freight through the southern corridor. My algorithms picked up something strange three months ago: Vance Logistics has been routing hundreds of empty container trucks through private toll bypasses owned by shell LLCs linked to County Commissioner Ronald Hayes and Chief Hector Miller.”

“Arthur is laundering bribes through commercial freight invoices,” I realized.

“Exactly. And I just cracked the encrypted financial ledger from Arthur’s offshore account in the Cayman Islands. He’s been paying Chief Hector Miller a ‘consulting fee’ of $25,000 every single month for the last six years.”

“Can you authenticate the bank transfers?”

“Every single cent, complete with SWIFT routing numbers, IP transaction timestamps originating from Arthur’s personal desk in his estate study, and digital signatures from Hector Miller’s private account,” Caleb confirmed. “Mark, this isn’t just a local assault case anymore. This is a multi-million-dollar federal criminal enterprise.”

“Keep digging, Caleb. Find out who owns the private security firm guarding the estate, and pull every cellular tower dump for Ross and Ethan’s burner phones over the last forty-eight hours.”

“Consider it done. And Mark?”

“Yeah?”

“Don't kill them with your hands. That’s too easy for people like them. Let them watch their entire empire burn to the ground from the inside of a concrete federal cell.”

“That’s the plan,” I said, closing the laptop.

I geared up, strapped my concealed carry sidearm beneath my jacket, and headed back toward El Paso. It was time to pay my ex-wife a visit before she had the chance to control the narrative.
