Chapter 11 - The Golden Walls Begin to Crumble as the Matriarch Sells Out Her Own Blood

By 10:00 AM, news of the failed mercenary ambush on Blackwood Ridge had reached the international financial markets.

The Vance empire was experiencing a catastrophic, irreversible collapse.

The Federal Trade Commission, acting on the financial evidence provided by Caleb and Agent Lin, issued an emergency order freezing all seventy-two domestic and offshore bank accounts tied to Vance Logistics, Vance Timber, and Vance Capital Partners. Trading on Vance commercial bonds was halted. Major shipping lines abruptly canceled their contracts, and commercial suppliers locked the gates to their warehouses across three states.

Inside the Vance mansion, the realization of total ruin had finally broken the family’s unity.

Pauline Vance sat at the marble kitchen island, her hands shaking uncontrollably as she watched federal agents in tactical gear assemble mobile command units at the bottom of the estate’s private driveway.

Her defense attorney, a prominent white-collar specialist from Dallas, was on the speakerphone.

“Pauline, listen to me very carefully,” the attorney said, his voice stripped of all professional courtesy. “The U.S. Attorney has presented us with an unsealed 48-count indictment. The evidence is insurmountable. They have 4K multi-angle video of the assault, the original blue ledger with Arthur’s handwriting, the testimony of the eight captured contractors from Blackwood Ridge, and complete digital records of every bribe paid to Hector Miller.”

“There has to be a deal!” Pauline screamed into the phone. “I am a Vance! I will not spend the rest of my life in a federal penitentiary!”

“The only deal on the table is complete, unreserved cooperation,” the lawyer replied coldly. “The Department of Justice is willing to offer you a plea agreement for twelve years in a minimum-security facility instead of life imprisonment without parole. But the price is high: you must provide sworn, on-the-record testimony against Arthur, Ross, Ethan, and Veronica.”

Pauline froze. She looked across the hallway into the grand study, where Arthur was frantically packing bearer bonds and gold bullion into two leather duffel bags.

She looked toward the stairs, where Veronica was sitting on the bottom step, weeping uncontrollably into her hands.

For forty years, Pauline Vance had lived for social status, luxury, and power. She had spent her life looking down on the people of San Jeronimo, believing that her bloodline was superior to the law.

When the choice came down to saving her family or saving herself, her aristocratic veneer dissolved instantly.

She picked up the phone.

“I accept the deal,” Pauline whispered, without a single second of hesitation. “I will sign the affidavit. I will testify that Arthur ordered the assault on the federal convoy. I will testify that Veronica watched the beating from her window and instructed Ross to make sure Maya kept quiet. I will give you every bank account number Arthur hid in Switzerland.”

In the hallway, Veronica looked up, her bloodshot eyes wide with disbelief and betrayal.

“Mom…?” Veronica gasped, her voice cracking. “How could you do that? You’re selling out your own children!”

Pauline stood up, walked over to her daughter, and looked down at her with cold, merciless eyes.

“If you had kept your brothers under control, Veronica, none of this would have happened,” Pauline hissed venomously. “You couldn't even control a nine-year-old child. You destroyed this family with your stupidity. Now you can pay for it yourself.”

Veronica collapsed onto the floor, clutching her head and screaming in raw, agonizing despair.
