Chapter 15 - A Sunlit Morning by the Ocean Where My Daughter Never Has to Fear the Dark Again

One year later.
The golden morning sun rose over the Pacific Ocean, casting a warm, sparkling glow across the gentle waves rolling onto the sandy shores of Coronado, California.
I sat on the wooden deck of our new beachside cottage, holding a warm cup of coffee, listening to the rhythmic, soothing sound of the surf.
The air smelled of salt, eucalyptus, and clean ocean breeze—a world away from the suffocating pines, ammonia-scrubbed concrete, and corrupt shadows of San Jeronimo.
Through the Department of Justice’s civil asset forfeiture program, the Vance estate had been completely liquidated. The multi-million-dollar proceeds from Arthur’s seized empire were placed into an independent, court-supervised trust fund established exclusively for Maya’s lifelong medical care, education, and future well-being.
The old workshop on the Vance ranch had been completely demolished by county order, replaced by a public memorial park dedicated to child advocacy and the support of domestic violence survivors.
The corrupt police force of San Jeronimo had been completely overhauled by the Texas Department of Public Safety, restoring real law, integrity, and protection to the valley.
Down on the sand, fifty feet from the deck, Maya was running through the shallow surf with an energetic golden retriever puppy named Barnaby.
Her laughter—bright, clear, musical, and completely unburdened by the past—drifted up to the porch on the morning breeze.
She ran with a slight, barely noticeable hitch in her stride, but she ran fast, free, and completely fearless.
She stopped by a tidal pool, knelt down to examine a starfish, and then stood up, waving both arms enthusiastically at me.
“Daddy! Look! Barnaby found a giant seashell!”
I smiled, set my coffee cup down on the cedar table, and walked down the wooden stairs onto the warm, sunlit sand.
I knelt beside my daughter, admiring the smooth white shell she held out in her healthy, strong hands.
“It’s beautiful, Maya,” I said, brushing a strand of sun-bleached hair from her forehead.
She looked up at me, her big brown eyes shining with complete trust, safety, and pure joy.
“Daddy?”
“Yes, baby?”
“Are we going to stay here forever?”
I wrapped my arms around her, pulling her close against my chest, feeling the steady, strong, beautiful beat of her heart against mine.
“Forever, Maya,” I whispered into her hair, looking out over the endless, open horizon where the sun illuminated every corner of the earth without a single shadow in sight. “No more curtains. No more dark rooms. Just the sun, the ocean, and Daddy right beside you for as long as you live.”
Maya wrapped her arms around my neck, buried her face in my shoulder, and smiled.
The battle was over. The monsters were locked away in the dark.

And my little girl was finally, truly home.
