Chapter 6 - The Ghost of the Vanished Bratva Bloodline

The room was deathly quiet as the revelation sank in. Vincent looked at the woman before him with entirely new eyes.
The Volkov dynasty had been the undisputed royalty of the global underworld for half a century. They weren't mere gangsters; they were an aristocratic syndicate with political influence reaching from Moscow to Washington. When Viktor Volkov was betrayed, it triggered a global bloodbath that shifted the balance of power worldwide.
"Why me?" Vincent asked, crossing his arms. "Why spend two years playing a clumsy, timid secretary in my Chicago office?"
"Because the man who betrayed my father and funded the mercenaries who slaughtered my family wasn't just a Russian oligarch," Elena said, stepping toward him, the emeralds at her throat catching the dim light. "He needed a Western pipeline to launder the stolen billions and move his illegal arms into the Americas. He partnered with someone inside the Romano Syndicate."
Vincent’s jaw tightened. "Gregory."
"Gregory Harrison," Elena confirmed, nodding slowly. "Your loyal underboss has been Roman Khnets’ silent partner for three years. They used your logistics network to build an untraceable empire within your own empire. I needed access to your inner servers, your shipping logs, and your financial routing codes to trace the money back to the slaughter of my family."
"You used me," Vincent said, a dark edge to his voice.
"I protected you," she shot back fiercely. "Do you have any idea how many federal warrants I altered? How many poisoned shipments I quietly rerouted to save your ass from a life sentence? I made sure your empire stayed intact because I knew that when the time came, you would be the only man powerful and ruthless enough to help me burn Gregory and Khnets to the ground."
Vincent stared at her, feeling a strange, intoxicating surge of respect and fierce admiration. She wasn't an enemy. She was a queen playing a lethal game of chess on a board nobody else even knew existed.
"And tonight?" Vincent asked. "Why drop the disguise tonight?"
"Because Khnets and Gregory finalized their takeover plan," Elena said, her eyes burning with pure vengeance. "Tonight's hit wasn't just about killing you at the gala. It was the signal to seize your ports and execute a total coup of the Romano Syndicate. By sunrise, Gregory intends to announce your death and crown himself Don."
Vincent’s phone buzzed violently on the glass table.
He picked it up. A secure text flashed across the encrypted screen from his port security captain:
Code Black. Port 14 seized by rogue Romano units led by Gregory. Khnets' ships docking with heavy weaponry. They think you're dead.
Vincent looked up from the screen to meet Elena’s piercing gaze.
"It seems," Vincent said, a lethal smile spreading across his face, "we have a war to fight, Miss Volkova."

Elena reached down to her stiletto, drew a hidden carbon-fiber dagger from the heel, and twirled it between her fingers with deadly grace.
"I wouldn't have it any other way, Boss."
