Chapter 2 - The Queen of Shadows Drops the First Mask

The silence in the Aster Room was deafening. Every mafia Don, cartel lieutenant, and corrupt diplomat stared in stunned paralysis as Penelope glided across the marble floor.
Vincent felt his breath catch in his throat. This wasn't the clumsy, stammering girl who apologized to office furniture. This was a walking masterpiece of danger, wealth, and aristocratic dominance.
"Mr. Romano," she purred, stopping inches from his chest. Her voice was no longer a high-pitched, nervous squeak. It was a dark, honeyed contralto that sent a sudden electric shock straight down his spine. "I apologize for the delay. Traffic on Michigan Avenue was simply atrocious."
Roman Khnets looked like he had been struck across the face with an iron pipe. His eyes bugged out, traveling from the slit of her emerald dress to the staggering necklace adorning her throat. "Who... who the hell is this, Romano?"
Penelope turned her gaze slowly toward the massive Bratva boss. Her smile was sweet, but her eyes were absolute zero.
"I am Penelope Wright," she said, switching effortlessly into flawless, aristocratic St. Petersburg Russian. "And you must be Roman Khnets. The man who lost three cargo ships in the Black Sea last year because he couldn't read a basic naval manifest without his accountant holding his hand."
Khnets turned purple. His lieutenants instinctively reached inside their tuxedo jackets, their hands hovering over their holstered sidearms.
"Watch your tongue, woman," Khnets snarled in Russian, stepping forward menacingly. "You don't know who you are speaking to."
Penelope didn't flinch. She took a step toward the towering brute, her hazel eyes locking onto his with terrifying authority.
"I know exactly who you are, Roman," she whispered smoothly, continuing in razor-sharp Russian. "You are the third son of a Siberian fur smuggler who only inherited his rank because your brothers died of suspicious poisoning in Moscow. And if your goons touch those Glock-19s under their jackets, I will have the port authorities in Odessa seize your remaining four fuel tankers before midnight. Understood?"
The entire Russian entourage froze. Khnets looked at her as though he were staring at a ghost. His jaw trembled, and slowly, incredibly, he took a step back and bowed his head in terrified submission.
Vincent stood frozen, his mind spinning at a thousand miles per hour. Who the hell is sitting at my front desk?
Penelope turned back to Vincent, flashing a radiant, dazzling smile for the surrounding crowd. She slipped her gloved hand effortlessly into the crook of his arm, leaning in close enough that her intoxicating perfume—black orchids, vintage vanilla, and subtle gun oil—enveloped his senses.
"Shall we find our table, Vincent?" she whispered against his ear. "Your guests are staring."
May you like
Vincent forced his iron mask back into place, though his pulse was hammering against his temples. He placed his hand over hers, feeling the deceptive softness of her fingers. "You and I," he murmured under his breath, "are going to have a very long conversation tonight, Miss Wright."
"I look forward to it, Boss," she whispered back, a lethal, thrilling smirk dancing on her ruby lips.
