Chapter 7 - A Desperate Mother's Sacrifice and an Unforgivable Accusation

"Martha," Arthur commanded with absolute precision, "take the service elevator down to the wine cellar. There is an old maintenance tunnel that leads directly to the boathouse on the lake shore. Take the master keys and ensure the heavy iron gate is unlocked."

"Yes, Mr. Bennett," the housekeeper nodded, her eyes wide with determination. "God be with you both."

As Martha slipped out through the concealed library panel, Arthur turned to his antique mahogany desk. He pressed a hidden release latch beneath the center drawer, and a false bottom slid open with a soft click.

Inside lay a matte-black 9mm semi-automatic pistol, three fully loaded magazines, and a satellite phone.

"You kept a weapon in the house?" I asked, my heart pounding in my throat.

"I've spent two years pretending to be a broken, helpless invalid waiting for death," Arthur said, efficiently checking the chamber of the firearm before sliding it into his inner jacket pocket. "In this house of wolves, Clara, weakness is an invitation to the slaughter. I had to make Richard believe he was completely in control while I gathered evidence against his offshore laundering network."

Suddenly, my mobile phone in my apron pocket buzzed violently.

I snatched it out, seeing Mrs. Gable's number flashing on the cracked screen. A cold knot of absolute dread tightened in the pit of my stomach.

"Mrs. Gable? Is everything alright?"

"Clara! Oh God, Clara, thank goodness!" Mrs. Gable’s voice was hysterical, drowned out by the sound of sirens and screeching tires in the background. "Two men in black suits... they kicked my apartment door off the hinges! They were looking for you! They grabbed Brandon and Emma!"

The world stopped spinning. The air evacuated my lungs in a sickening rush.

"What?!" I screamed, my voice tearing through the library. "Where are my children?! Where did they take them?!"

"They threw them into a black SUV!" Mrs. Gable wept frantically. "One of the men left a message for you! He said... he said if you want to see your kids alive, you must bring the Bennett family documents to the old coastal warehouse near Pier 42 before dawn! Clara, call the police! Please!"

The line went dead with a harsh buzz.

My phone slipped from my lifeless fingers, clattering onto the hardwood floor. My knees buckled, and I collapsed against the edge of the desk, clutching my stomach as an agonizing, primal scream tore from my throat.

"Brandon... Emma..."

My precious, innocent babies. Brandon with his gentle smile and worn-out sneakers; little Emma who held my hand whenever thunder shook our tiny room. They had dragged my innocent children into this pit of greed and blood.

"Clara!" Arthur was instantly at my side, his powerful hands gripping my shoulders, shaking me with urgent force. "Look at me! Clara, focus on my voice!"

"They have my children, Julian!" I sobbed hysterically, clawing at his arms. "Victoria found out where I lived! She sent men to kidnap my babies! If I don't give them the documents, they will kill them! I have to go! I have to save them!"

Arthur’s face morphed into an expression of absolute, terrifying fury. His jaw was set so hard a muscle twitched violently along his cheek, and his dark eyes burned with a murderous wrath that could incinerate the night.

"They dared touch your children?" Arthur’s voice was a low, vibrating rumble of pure vengeance. "They think they can use innocent blood to break us?"

May you like

He reached down and grabbed the yellowed testament from the desk, shoving it securely inside his coat alongside the pistol.

"We are not negotiating with them, Clara," Arthur said, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "We are going to Pier 42. And I swear on my life, on every breath I have left, Richard and Victoria will pay for every single tear you have shed tonight."
