Chapter 10 - A Gala of Wolves and a Mask Slipped in the Moonlight

Down on the warehouse floor, Richard checked his gold pocket watch with an exaggerated sigh of impatience.

"Where is that pathetic girl?" Victoria spat, pacing back and forth on her high heels, her designer coat splattered with warehouse grime. "It's past the deadline. If she doesn't show up in two minutes, father, I say we dump these brats in the river and fly to Zurich before Arthur's lawyers figure out the trust."

"Patience, Victoria," Richard said smoothly, tapping his cane against the concrete. "Clara is a mother. A starving, desperate mother will walk through fire for her offspring. She will be here."

Suddenly, the massive industrial fuse box on the eastern wall exploded in a shower of blinding sparks.

The floodlights died instantly, plunging the entire warehouse into pitch-black darkness.

"What the hell was that?!" Victoria shrieked.

"Guards! Weapons hot!" Richard roared, his voice losing all its polished elegance. "Secure the perimeter!"

Red laser sights cut through the darkness, sweeping frantically across the empty shadows.

From high above in the rafters, a voice boomed through the cavernous space—a voice deep, commanding, and laced with absolute, terrifying authority.

"You're looking in the wrong direction, Richard."

A heavy flashbang grenade dropped from the catwalk, detonating with a deafening CRACK and an explosion of pure white light directly between the two perimeter guards.

The guards screamed, clutching their blinded eyes as they stumbled across the concrete.

Before the echoes of the blast could fade, Arthur dropped from the lower gantry, landing firmly on his feet like a shadow out of the storm. He moved with brutal, military precision. In three fluid strikes, he disarmed the first guard, slammed him into a steel pillar, and swept the legs out from beneath the second, rendering both unconscious in less than four seconds.

Victoria gasped, staggering backward in absolute horror as the backup emergency lights flickered to life.

She stared at the tall, powerful figure emerging from the smoke—the man she had spent two years poisoning, the man she believed was trapped in a wheelchair.

"Arthur?!" Victoria choked out, her voice pitching into a terrified squeak. "You... you're walking?! How are you walking?!"

Richard’s face contorted into a mask of pure, unadulterated madness. "Kill him! Shoot him now!"

The lead bodyguard raised his submachine gun, aiming directly at Arthur's chest.

BANG!

A gunshot cracked through the upper level.

I stood on the lower fire escape platform, both hands gripping the pistol, the barrel smoking in the cold air. My shot struck the bodyguard's shoulder, sending his weapon clattering across the floor.

"Brandon! Emma!" I screamed, dropping down the remaining ladder and sprinting across the concrete toward my children.

"Mommy!" Emma wailed, tears streaming down her face. "Mommy!"

"Mom!" Brandon shouted, his brave little voice cracking with relief.

Richard, realizing his entire world was collapsing in a matter of seconds, lunged forward with surprising speed, pulling a snub-nosed revolver from his jacket and aiming it straight at Brandon’s head.

"Nobody move!" Richard shrieked, his eyes bulging with insane fury. "One more step and I blow this boy's brains out! Drop the guns! Drop them, Arthur, or he dies right now!"
