Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Penthouse: When Loyalty Turns into Unspoken Desire

That night, after returning from the gala, the adrenaline that had sustained us gave way to a thick, suffocating tension inside the quiet halls of the Rossi estate.

I stood in the center of the grand master bedroom, unfastening the heavy diamond necklace and placing it onto the velvet vanity tray. The reflection in the mirror showed my flushed cheeks and the wild, dark energy still vibrating in my eyes.

Dominic stood near the terrace doors, having discarded his tuxedo jacket and unbuttoned the top three buttons of his black dress shirt. He was pouring two glasses of amber bourbon from a crystal decanter.

"You didn't flinch tonight," Dominic observed, his deep voice slicing through the quiet room. He walked over and handed me a glass. "When Costa approached, when the guns were drawn... most people would have screamed. You didn't even blink."

I took a slow sip of the burning liquor, letting the heat settle in my chest. "I took seven bullets for your mother, Dominic. Do you really think an old man with bad posture and cheap threats is going to make me tremble?"

A slow, devastatingly handsome smirk spread across Dominic’s lips. He set his glass down on the vanity, stepping directly into my personal space.

"No," he murmured, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made the room feel suddenly devoid of air. "I suppose you wouldn't."

He reached out, his warm fingers lightly catching the zipper at the back of my emerald dress. "May I?"

My breath hitched. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs, not from fear, but from the raw, undeniable electricity that had been building between us for weeks.

"Yes," I whispered.

With agonizing slowness, Dominic pulled the zipper down. The cool night air hit my bare back as the silk fabric fell slightly away from my shoulders. Dominic didn't step back. Instead, his large, warm hands settled on my waist, his thumbs slowly tracing the jagged, silvery ridge of the bullet scar just above my hip.

His touch was so tender, so reverent, that a soft shiver racked my entire body.

"Does it still hurt?" he asked, his voice dropping into a rough, husky whisper as his face dipped toward the crook of my neck.

"Only when the weather gets cold," I breathed out, tilting my head back slightly, unable to resist the intoxicating warmth of his presence. "And when I remember how close I came to never seeing tomorrow."

Dominic pressed a soft, searing kiss against the scar on my shoulder blade.

The sensation sent an electric shock straight to my core. I turned around in his embrace, the loose silk of my dress slipping down my arms, held up only by the friction of our bodies pressing together.

"You saved my mother's life, Maya," Dominic whispered, his hands sliding up to cup my face, his thumbs stroking across my cheekbones. "Every single day I look at you, all I see is the miracle that kept my family whole. But God help me... over these past weeks, it stopped being about gratitude."

"What is it about now, Dominic?" I challenged softly, looking up into those dark, fathomless eyes that ruled an empire.

"It’s about the fact that I can't sleep unless you're in the next room," Dominic confessed, his voice thick with raw, undisguised hunger. "It’s about the fact that I want to tear down this city for anyone who ever made you cry. It’s about the fact that you are my wife... and I am completely, utterly consumed by you."

Before I could speak, Dominic closed the remaining distance and captured my lips with his.

The kiss was fierce, demanding, and filled with a possessive passion that stole all the air from my lungs. It was the kiss of a man who had claimed my life, my soul, and my safety, and who would burn the world to keep me.

May you like

I wound my arms around his neck, sinking my fingers into his thick, dark hair, pulling him closer as the heavy silk dress fell completely to the hardwood floor.

In the shadows of that grand bedroom, surrounded by an empire of danger and blood, the line between a marriage of convenience and an all-consuming love shattered forever.
