Chapter 7 - The Evidence and the Airline Report

By 7:00 AM the following morning, I had already drunk three cups of black hotel coffee and created a comprehensive digital dossier on my laptop.
I downloaded every bank statement from the past three years. I took screenshots of the LLC filings, the wire transfer receipts, and the public social media posts where Elena Vance thanked her "angel investor and partner Brandon Matthews" for funding the acquisition of prime Minneapolis real estate.
Then, I received an email notification that made my heart race.
It was from the FAA Aviation Safety Hotline and the corporate communications office of Brandon’s airline, Northern Skies Express.
A video of Brandon’s mid-flight proposal and the subsequent confrontation in the jet bridge had gone viral on TikTok and Twitter overnight. A passenger had recorded the entire incident—from Brandon’s romantic speech to Toby holding up his drawing, to me exposing his ten-year marriage. The video already had over four million views, with the hashtag #ScumbagPilot trending across the Midwest.
My phone rang. The caller ID showed an unfamiliar Minneapolis local number.
I hesitated for a moment before pressing the green button. "Hello?"
"Claire?"
The voice was female, crisp, professional, but laced with profound exhaustion and regret.
"This is Elena Vance," the woman said. "Please don't hang up. I got your number from the passenger manifest records through a contact at the airline terminal. We need to talk."
I leaned back in the desk chair, glancing at Toby, who was still sleeping peacefully across the room. "I don't think we have anything left to discuss, Ms. Vance. You got proposed to, and I found out my husband is a fraud."
"Claire, listen to me," Elena’s voice was urgent, trembling with barely suppressed anger. "I spent the last twelve hours with my corporate lawyers and private forensic accountants. Brandon didn't just lie to me about being a widower. He scammed my development firm out of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in matching capital."
I sat up straight. "What?"
"He presented himself as an angel investor with private equity from an inheritance," Elena explained, her voice sharp. "He convinced me to put his LLC on the title of two commercial parcels here in the city. When I cross-referenced the transaction history this morning after what happened at the gate, I realized he was using stolen funds—your family's funds—to leverage credit lines under my company's name!"
"He drained my son’s college savings," I said, the cold rage returning to my voice.
"I know," Elena replied softly. "And I am going to help you get every single cent back. Plus damages. He tried to destroy my professional reputation and your family's entire life. I have a team of corporate litigators sitting in my office right now. If you're willing to meet with me, we can coordinate our legal response before he even has time to hire an attorney."

I looked over at Toby, who was beginning to stir in the morning light.
"Send me your office address," I said. "I'll be there in an hour."
