Chapter 15 - The Best Pilot Ever

The flight to Seattle was nothing short of magical.

As we cruised at thirty-four thousand feet, the flight attendant brought Toby a special set of plastic golden wings and a coloring book. Toby spent an hour drawing the majestic snow-capped peaks of the Rockies as they passed beneath our window, pointing out every river and valley with boundless wonder.

When we landed smoothly at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Elena Vance was waiting for us right at the arrival gate, holding a giant bouquet of yellow sunflowers and a box of Seattle’s famous artisan chocolates.

"There's my favorite co-pilot!" Elena squealed, dropping to her knees and wrapping Toby in an enormous hug.

"Aunt Elena!" Toby laughed, handing her a drawing he had made on the flight. "Look! I drew your new building with Mount Rainier behind it!"

Elena looked at the drawing, tears shimmering in her eyes. "Oh, Toby... this is going right in the center of the main lobby. You are truly the most talented artist in the country."

She stood up and wrapped her arms around me, holding me tight. "You made it, Claire. Look at you two. You’re glowing."

"We made it," I smiled, looking around the bustling, vibrant terminal.

That evening, the gallery opening was a magnificent triumph. The grand lobby of Elena’s new luxury high-rise was filled with lights, live jazz music, and hundreds of celebrating guests. In the very center of the main exhibition wall, encased in a gorgeous custom gold frame, hung Toby’s drawing of the building, proudly credited to Toby Matthews, Chief Architectural Illustrator.

Later that night, Toby, Elena, and I walked along the waterfront pier, watching the Seattle Great Wheel spin its colorful neon lights against the dark night sky. The cool ocean breeze smelled of salt and cedar, carrying with it the promise of endless new beginnings.

Toby ran ahead along the wooden boardwalk, holding his arms out wide like the wings of a jet, making soft swooshing sounds as he banked left and right beneath the stars.

I watched him run—free from fear, free from lies, and surrounded by unconditional love.

My husband had once tried to convince the world that he was a hero flying high above the clouds, while treating the people who loved him like collateral damage. But as I watched my son laugh under the starlight, I knew that true strength didn't come from a uniform, a title, or an intercom announcement.

True strength was rebuilding a broken world into something stronger, kinder, and brighter than it had ever been before.

Toby stopped at the edge of the railing, turned around, and waved his little arms frantically at me.

"Mom! Come on! Look at the ferry boats!" he shouted, his voice ringing with pure, unbridled joy.

"Coming, Captain!" I laughed, jogging across the wooden planks to take my place right beside him.

We stood together by the water, looking out toward the vast, open ocean, ready for every beautiful horizon waiting ahead.
