Chapter 2 - The Ring in Seat 3A

The cabin erupted into a deafening wave of gasps, cheers, and spontaneous applause. Passengers in the forward rows stood up, craning their necks toward first class to catch a glimpse of the lucky woman. Several flight attendants near the galley clapped their hands together, beaming at the romance unfolding in the sky.

I sat frozen in seat 24E, paralyzed as if every drop of blood in my body had suddenly turned to liquid nitrogen.

The phone slipped from my fingers, tumbling onto my lap. The screen remained lit, still recording, capturing my trembling hands and the blank, hollow expression on my face.

Elena Vance.

A broken, lonely man.

Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife.

The words repeated in my head like an alarm siren blaring inside an empty room. Brandon hadn't been a broken, lonely man. He had kissed me on the forehead at 5:30 that very morning, whispered that he loved me, and complained about the kitchen faucet needing a new washer before heading out the door. We had celebrated our tenth wedding anniversary four months ago in Cabo. We shared a mortgage, a joint checking account, and a seven-year-old son who worshipped the ground he walked on.

"Mom?"

A small, frightened voice broke through the deafening roar of applause.

I looked down. Toby wasn’t smiling anymore. His drawing of the BEST PILOT EVER had slipped from his lap onto the cabin floor, crumpled under the seat in front of him. His wide brown eyes darted between the celebrating passengers around us and my horrified, pale face.

"Mom... why did Dad say that name?" Toby whispered, his lower lip quivering violently. "Who is Elena? Why did he ask her to marry him? Isn't he married to you?"

"Toby, baby..." My voice cracked, coming out as nothing more than a ragged wheeze. I couldn't breathe. My lungs felt flat, completely crushed under an invisible boulder. "Just... stay in your seat. Put your seatbelt back on."

Up near the front of the aircraft, the cabin door opened briefly, and Brandon stepped out of the flight deck holding a bouquet of small red roses he must have stashed in the cockpit earlier. The passengers in the front rows cheered even louder.

From my distant vantage point in row 24, through the narrow gap between the seats and the heads of enthusiastic tourists, I saw her.

Elena Vance stood up from seat 3A. She was gorgeous—sleek blonde hair cut in an elegant bob, wearing a tailored cream cashmere sweater and pearl earrings. She had her hands pressed over her mouth, tears streaming down her cheeks. Brandon walked straight to her, wrapped his strong arms around her waist, and lifted her off her feet, spinning her around in the aisle before kissing her passionately on the mouth.

The entire plane went wild. A woman sitting across the aisle from me in seat 24D wiped a tear from her eye and turned to me. "Isn't that the most romantic thing you’ve ever seen? Oh, you just never see men do things like that anymore!"

I stared at her. I couldn't blink. I couldn't speak. I felt a cold, acidic bile rise in my throat. If I opened my mouth, I was either going to scream or vomit.

Toby buried his face into my side, his small shoulders shaking with silent, terrified sobs. "Mom, make him stop. Why is Dad kissing that lady? Mom, tell him to stop!"

I wrapped my arms around Toby, pulling him tightly against my chest, shielding his eyes from the front of the cabin. I pressed my chin against the top of his head, feeling the warmth of his tears soaking through my sweater. My heart was breaking into a thousand jagged pieces, not just for the betrayal of my marriage, but for the brutal destruction of my little boy's innocence.

"Shh, Toby. Look at me," I whispered, forcing myself to look into his tear-stained eyes even though my own vision was blurred with agony. "Look at Mom. Don't look up there."

"Is Dad not our dad anymore?" Toby choked out, his small hand clutched around my thumb like a lifeline. "Did we do something bad?"

"No! No, Toby, never," I said fiercely, my voice shaking with raw maternal fury. "You did nothing wrong. You are the best boy in the whole world. Do you hear me? Look at me. You are perfect. None of this is your fault."

May you like

The plane began to push back from the gate. Brandon returned to the cockpit to prepare for taxi and takeoff, leaving Elena Vance sitting in seat 3A, surrounded by admiring passengers asking to see her hand, showering her with congratulations.

For the next ninety minutes, we were trapped in a metal tube at thirty-two thousand feet with the man who had just publicly executed our family.
