Chapter 6 - An Ally in Uniform: Calling In the Cavalry

By the next afternoon, the luxury house was a hive of frantic activity. Caterers arrived in white vans, delivering silver trays of roasted meats, artisanal cheeses, and expensive champagne. Margaret fluttered around the living room in an emerald-green evening gown, barking orders at the staff and rearranging floral centerpieces.

I dressed in my formal Army Class A Dress Blue uniform. The fabric was crisp, the brass buttons polished to a mirror shine, and the rows of ribbons and medals across my chest—including my Purple Heart and Bronze Star—gleamed under the chandeliers.

Margaret stopped in the middle of the grand foyer when she saw me walking down the main staircase.

"Oh, Travis!" she gasped, clasping her hands over her heart with theatrical emotion. "Look at my boy! A true American hero! When the guests see you tonight, they’ll understand why this family holds its head so high in this town."

"Everything is prepared, Mom," I said, adjusting my cuffs. "Did you invite everyone?"

"The mayor's deputy, the president of the bank, and all the board members from the country club," Margaret beamed proudly. "They all know you’ve come home with high honors and significant wealth. It will cement our standing forever!"

"And the binder with all the financial records?" I asked.

"Right here on the display table next to the champagne fountain," Margaret said, patting the leather-bound book. "Ready for everyone to see how brilliantly we’ve managed your legacy."

At 6:30 PM, the guests began to pour in. Men in tailored suits and women in cocktail dresses filled the open-concept living room, sipping champagne and marveling at the marble countertops and high ceilings. Margaret worked the room effortlessly, accepting compliments on the house while subtly hinting at the $400,000 trust that was about to expand their empire.

"Yes, my son Travis has always been generous," Margaret announced to a small circle of wealthy neighbors. "He knows that family comes first. We sacrificed so much while he was away, and now we get to share in his triumph."

At 7:15 PM, the heavy double front doors swung open once more.

Instead of another socialite, three tall men in formal Army Dress Uniforms stepped inside, led by Captain Marcus Vance. Beside them were two uniformed county sheriff’s deputies and Eleanor Ross, who carried a slim black briefcase.

The room fell silent at the sight of law enforcement and senior military officers entering the party.

Margaret blinked, caught off guard, but immediately plastered on her most gracious host smile. "Oh! Travis, did you invite your military friends? Welcome, gentlemen! Please, grab a glass of champagne!"

Marcus did not smile. He walked straight into the center of the grand living room, his combat boots clicking authoritatively against the polished hardwood floor.

"Mrs. Margaret Vance?" Marcus asked, his deep voice carrying across the entire room, silencing the classical background music.

"Yes, that's me," Margaret said, her smile wavering slightly. "Is something wrong?"

"Under the authority of the United States Department of Defense, the Judge Advocate General's Corps, and the State District Court," Marcus announced coldly, "we are executing a formal evidentiary seizure and asset freeze on this property."
