Chapter 5 - The Sister’s Boast and the Secret Recorder

Later that afternoon, I walked down to the local pharmacy, paid cash for high-calorie nutritional shakes, vitamins, and gentle skin balms, and brought them down to the storage shed.

Gwen was resting on the thin mattress. Her face looked a fraction brighter just knowing I was near, but her physical weakness was heartbreaking. I helped her sit up, carefully feeding her the nutritional drink, wiping a small drop from her lip.

"Eleanor Ross is handling everything," I whispered softly. "By tomorrow night, you will never have to step foot in this cold room again. We’re moving you directly into the university medical center’s private oncology suite."

Gwen leaned her head against my shoulder. "Travis... what if they try to deny it? Your mother is so charming. Everyone in town thinks she's a saint."

"She can charm whoever she wants," I replied. "Numbers and recordings don't lie."

Before I left the shed, I placed a tiny, voice-activated military recording device—no larger than a coin—inside the collar of the spare jacket hanging behind the basement door.

Ten minutes later, Paige came stomping down the wooden steps, holding a basket of dirty laundry. She threw the basket onto the concrete floor right in front of Gwen.

"Get these washed and pressed before tomorrow evening," Paige ordered, admiring her newly manicured acrylic nails. "Mom invited twenty guests from the neighborhood association and the club. We need the house spotless."

Gwen kept her head down, following our plan. "I'm... I'm very weak today, Paige. My chest hurts where the doctor did the biopsy."

Paige scoffed loudly, crossing her arms. "Oh, give me a break! You’re still playing that cancer card? Even if you are sick, it's not our problem. Travis is back, and once he signs that $400,000 over to Mom and me tomorrow, we’re finally putting you on a bus back to your hometown. You honestly thought a handsome, wealthy soldier like my brother would stay with a bald, scrawny charity case? Mom already told him you cheated, and he believed every word."

"He sent that money for both of us," Gwen whispered, her voice trembling with simulated defeat. "He earned that in the war."

"He earned it, and we spent it!" Paige laughed cruelly. "Who do you think looks better in a new truck, me or you? Look at yourself! You sold your hair for chump change while I’m buying Prada bags. Now shut your mouth and do the laundry, or I’ll tell Mom not to give you dinner tonight."

Paige turned on her designer heels and marched back up the stairs, the heavy wooden door slamming shut behind her.

Upstairs in the hallway, I stood in the shadows, listening through the wireless receiver connected to my phone. Every word, every laugh, and every admission of guilt had been captured in crystal-clear digital audio.

I saved the file, uploaded it to Eleanor Ross's secure legal server, and sent a two-word message to Marcus Vance:
