Chapter 9 - The Safehouse on the Cliff and Midnight Confessions

Within four minutes of the alarm sounding, Leo was intercepted in the underground parking garage by Paulie and three armed enforcers.
The interrogation took less than ten minutes in the soundproof basement security cell. Leo broke immediately, confessing that Marco Falcone had kidnapped his younger sister two days prior, threatening to execute her unless Leo slipped the cyanide into Dante’s morning decanter.
Dante stood in the center of the penthouse living room, buttoning a heavy tactical jacket over his dark combat sweater.
“Paulie,” Dante ordered coldly. “Take a strike team to the warehouse in Renton. Retrieve Leo’s sister alive. Put a bullet in every Falcone operative guarding that building.”
“And what about Leo, boss?” Paulie asked, his face dark with fury.
“Send him out of the country once his sister is safe,” Dante replied, surprising Khloe. “A man who acts to save his family gets one ounce of mercy. But he never steps foot on American soil again.”
Dante turned to Khloe, grabbing her hand and pulling her toward the private elevator. “We’re leaving. The penthouse is compromised until my sweepers check every inch of the ventilation and electrical grid.”
“Where are we going?” Khloe asked, clutching the small duffel bag Mrs. Gable had packed for her.
“The coastal fortress on Orcas Island,” Dante said, stepping into the elevator. “A place Falcone’s rats don't know exists.”
Two hours later, after a covert helicopter flight over the mist-shrouded waters of the Salish Sea, they landed on the private helipad of a sprawling stone-and-glass estate perched on the sheer granite cliffs of Orcas Island.
Surrounded by dense pine forests and the roaring, freezing waves of the Pacific Ocean below, the estate looked completely isolated from the modern world. Reinforced steel shutters covered the panoramic windows, and high-tech radar arrays scanned the perimeter waters.
Inside, a massive stone fireplace dominated the great room, radiating a comforting, crackling warmth against the coastal chill.
Dante dismissed the island’s skeletal security staff to the perimeter gatehouses, ensuring complete privacy inside the main lodge.
That evening, as the rain battered against the reinforced glass and the wind howled through the Douglas firs outside, Khloe found Dante sitting on the stone hearth, cleaning his customized Sig Sauer pistol with meticulous precision.
She walked over, carrying two mugs of hot cocoa, and sat on the floor beside him, tucking her legs beneath her oversized sweater.
“Hot chocolate,” she said, handing him a mug. “No cyanide. I made it myself.”
A faint, rare smile touched Dante’s lips. He took the mug, setting his disassembled weapon aside on the table. “Thank you.”
They sat in silence for a long time, watching the amber flames dance across the birch logs.
“Why didn't you kill Leo?” Khloe asked softly, looking at his scarred profile. “Back at the gala, you seemed ready to execute anyone who crossed your path.”
Dante stared into the fire, taking a slow sip of the cocoa. “Because Leo did what any man with blood in his veins would do to protect his sister. I despise traitors, Khloe. But I understand loyalty to family. When my family died on Bainbridge Island, there was no one left to protect them. If I had to burn the world to save my sister back then... I would have done it without blinking.”
Khloe shifted closer to him, her shoulder brushing his arm. “You carry the weight of the entire world on your shoulders, Dante. Doesn't it get exhausting?”
Dante turned his head, his dark eyes locking onto hers in the firelight. “It was exhausting. Every day was an endless, gray war against enemies who wanted my blood. Until last night.”
Khloe’s pulse skipped. “What changed last night?”
Dante reached out, his warm, scarred fingers gently brushing the side of her cheek, tracing down to the corner of her lips. “A girl with terrified eyes crawled under my table in a rainstorm and showed more courage than half the soldiers in my syndicate. You saw the devil I am, and instead of running, you stood in front of Falcone, you defied your abuser, and you saved my life from poison.”
He leaned closer, his deep voice dropping into an intoxicating whisper. “I thought I was saving you from Jared Vance, Khloe. But the truth is... you are the one who saved me from becoming a monster with no soul left.”
Tears of profound, overwhelming emotion blurred Khloe’s vision. She leaned forward, pressing her forehead against his chest, feeling the deep, steady rhythm of his heartbeat beneath the heavy sweater.
Dante wrapped both arms around her, pulling her onto his lap and burying his face in her soft, fragrant hair. He held her as if she were the only real, sacred thing in a universe of blood and ash.
“Dante,” she whispered against his neck. “I don't want the two million dollars. I don't want the offshore account or the private flight when the six months are over.”
Dante pulled back slightly, looking into her eyes with raw, fierce intensity. “What do you want, Khloe?”
May you like
“I want you,” she breathed. “I want to stay with you. Forever.”
Dante’s eyes flared with a dark, triumphant fire. He cupped her face in both hands and kissed her—a deep, desperate, and passionate vow that sealed their souls together in the heat of the roaring fire.
