Chapter 9 - The Safe Behind Sofia’s Portrait

Two hours later, the estate was surrounded by federal cruisers and unmarked black SUVs.

The sirens had been shut off.

Crime scene technicians in white paper booties dusted the master bedroom for fingerprints.

Claire was escorted out through the grand double doors in heavy steel leg irons.

She didn't look at me as they walked her down the gravel driveway.

Her designer robe was torn and covered in dust.

Her head hung low, her golden hair hiding her ruined face.

Dr. Vance and Marcus Kane were loaded into separate ambulances under heavy armed escort.

Miller was thrown into the back of a Federal Marshal van, his badge stripped from his pocket.

The quiet had finally returned to the Bel-Air hills.

I walked down the long carpeted corridor toward the private study.

Above the marble fireplace hung Sofia’s oil portrait.

She was wearing a simple emerald-green silk dress, her dark hair falling over her bare shoulders.

Her soft, kind smile seemed to follow me across the room.

I reached behind the gilded frame and pressed the hidden release latch.

The painting swung forward on silent hydraulic hinges, revealing the heavy digital wall safe behind it.

I punched in the eight-digit code.

It wasn't a combination of dates or birthdays.

It was the coordinates of the small coastal town in Italy where Sofia and I had first met.

The safe door clicked open with a deep hum.

Inside sat the original blue trust folder Claire had tried to forge.

Beside it lay Sofia’s real engagement ring—a five-carat cushion-cut diamond set in platinum.

Claire had hidden a fake ring in Maria’s room to frame her.

The real one had never left this safe.

I picked up the velvet box and held it tight in my palm.

"You protected them, Sofia," I whispered into the empty room.

"You protected all of us."

A soft knock sounded at the open study door.

I turned around.

Maria was standing in the doorway, wearing a clean apron over her simple sweater.

Her dark eyes were swollen from crying, but for the first time in three years, the tension had vanished from her shoulders.

Behind her stood Emma and Lily.

Lily was holding her faded gray stuffed rabbit against her chest.

Daniel had climbed the bookcase and retrieved it for her an hour ago.

"Daddy?" Lily whispered, her little voice trembling.

I dropped to my knees on the Persian rug and held out both arms.

Both girls broke into a run.

They threw themselves into my chest with so much force that I fell backward against the mahogany desk.

Lily buried her wet face into my neck, sobbing uncontrollably.

Emma wrapped her arms around my shoulders, gripping my shirt as if she would never let go.

"I’m here, baby," I whispered over and over, kissing the tops of their heads.

"Daddy is here. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again."

"I promise you."

May you like

"I swear on your mother’s soul."

Maria stood by the door, tears streaming down her smiling face, hands folded over her heart.
