Chapter 14 - The Midnight Arrest

Later that night, the federal court handed down its final ruling on the Vance conspiracy.

Katherine Ross called me at eleven o'clock to deliver the news.

Evelyn Vance had accepted a blind plea to avoid life imprisonment without parole.

She was sentenced to twenty-two years at the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, California.

All of her private estates in Newport Beach and Aspen were forfeited to the United States government.

Captain Robert Miller was stripped of his pension, dishonorably dismissed from the LAPD, and sentenced to eighteen years in a federal penitentiary for civil rights violations and conspiracy.

Claire Vane’s trial date was canceled.

Faced with her own recorded confessions and the testimony of Dr. Vance, she pleaded guilty to all eleven counts.

The federal judge sentenced her to twenty-six years without the possibility of federal parole.

Justice had not just been served.

It had been carved into stone.

I walked softly down the upstairs corridor of my quiet home.

I cracked open the door to Emma’s bedroom.

She was sleeping soundly beneath her warm duvet, her breathing deep, steady, and peaceful.

No nightmares woke her tonight.

I moved to Lily’s room.

The nightlight cast a soft amber glow across her walls.

Lily was curled up on her side, clutching Sofia’s faded gray rabbit tightly under her chin.

I knelt beside her mattress, tucking the edges of her blanket around her small shoulders.

She stirred slightly in her sleep, smiling as she felt my hand brush through her dark hair.

"Goodnight, my sweet girl," I whispered.

I stood up and walked toward the master bedroom.

For months, that room had felt poisoned by Claire’s presence.

Her expensive perfumes, her designer dresses, her cold, calculating eyes.

Over the weekend, Daniel’s team had cleared every single item she owned out of the room.

The old furniture had been donated to charity.

The walls had been painted a warm, serene ivory.

The large French balcony doors were wide open, letting in the cool, crisp night air from the canyon.

The poison was gone.

The house was clean.
