Chapter 10 - Breaking The Iron Gate

Over the next forty-eight hours, the Vance financial empire collapsed like a house of dry kindling.
Katherine Ross worked around the clock from the federal building in downtown Los Angeles.
The encrypted USB drive from Sofia’s green lockbox was a masterstroke of corporate espionage.
Sofia had spent the final year of her life recording every conversation, every transaction, and every shell company Evelyn Vance had created.
By Tuesday morning, federal judges in New York, Zurich, and London had issued emergency freeze orders on over two hundred million dollars in hidden assets.
Claire Vane was formally indicted on eleven federal counts:
Conspiracy to commit murder.
Extortion.
Attempted child endangerment.
Manufacture and distribution of Schedule II controlled substances.
Wire fraud.
Her bail was set at twenty-five million dollars cash.
Nobody came to pay it.
Evelyn Vance’s high-priced legal team tried to file an emergency habeas corpus motion on Wednesday afternoon.
It was rejected by the federal circuit court within forty-five minutes.
Dr. Vance, facing thirty years in federal prison, turned state’s evidence and signed a comprehensive confession detailing Claire’s plot to medicate Emma and Lily.
The corrupt judge who signed Miller’s fake warrant resigned in disgrace before federal agents arrested him at his country club.
The rot that had threatened my home had been cut out down to the very roots.
On Thursday morning, I sat at the head of the long conference table in my Beverly Hills office.
My attorney, David Harris, pushed a stack of legal documents across the glass surface.
"It’s completely finalized, Alex," David said, pointing to the signature lines.
"The Sofia Vance Irrevocable Trust has been fully restructured."
"No outside party—not Evelyn, not Claire, not any distant relative—can ever contest the assets."
"The entire eighty-four million dollars is locked until Emma and Lily turn twenty-five."
"And you have added the secondary provision?" I asked, looking up from the paperwork.
David smiled warmly and nodded.
"Yes, sir. Maria Santos has been named the permanent legal co-trustee alongside you."
"If anything ever happens to you, full custody and financial control of the estate passes directly to Maria."
"She will receive an annual executive stipend of five hundred thousand dollars for the rest of her life."
I picked up my Montblanc pen and signed my name across every page without a single moment of hesitation.

Money had almost destroyed my family.
Now, that money would ensure the woman who had truly loved my daughters would never have to worry about a single bill again.
