Chapter 8 - The Shadow War in the Neon City: Ambushed at the River Docks

By 7:00 PM, the rain had returned to New Harbor, turning the neon-lit avenues into shimmering rivers of black and gold.

A convoy of three black armored Mercedes sedans wound its way down the winding mountain pass toward the city center. In the center vehicle, Arthur sat dressed in a flawless midnight-blue bespoke tuxedo, his injured arm resting comfortably inside a concealed silk sling beneath his tailored jacket.

Beside him sat Maeve.

She wore an emerald-green silk evening gown that hugged her slender frame, the Romano heirloom sapphire glowing brilliantly at her throat. Her dark hair was swept up into an elegant chignon, revealing the graceful line of her neck.

On the floor between them, Goliath wore a custom black leather harness reinforced with Kevlar plating.

“You look breathtaking, Maeve,” Arthur said softly, his hand resting over hers on the leather seat.

Maeve swallowed the knot of nerves in her throat. “I feel like an imposter. If someone asks me what vintage of wine I prefer, I’m going to tell them whatever is in the bottom of the bottle.”

Arthur let out a low, genuine chuckle. “The people in that ballroom are vultures, Maeve. They know the price of everything and the value of nothing. Your authenticity will terrify them more than a loaded gun.”

Suddenly, the lead sedan in their convoy slammed on its brakes.

SCREEECH!

A massive commercial semi-truck pulled out from a dark pier access road, jackknifing directly across the narrow river bridge and completely blocking all four lanes.

From the shadows of the cargo containers lining the docks, a dozen heavily armed men in black tactical gear emerged, raising automatic shotguns and assault rifles.

“Ambush!” Matteo roared from the front passenger seat, drawing his submachine gun. “Dominic’s river patrol! They knew our route!”

RAT-A-TAT-TAT-TAT!

A hail of high-caliber armor-piercing bullets slammed into the convoy’s windshields. The reinforced ballistic glass spiderwebbed instantly, holding against the onslaught but blinding the driver.

“Reverse! Back out of the kill zone!” Arthur ordered calmly, his voice cutting through the deafening noise of the attack.

“The rear is blocked, Boss!” the driver shouted as a second flatbed truck slammed into the rear of the convoy, trapping them on the narrow bridge above the freezing waters of the shipping channel.

Maeve gasped, pressing herself back into the leather cushions as bullets ricocheted off the steel roof like hail on a tin roof.

“Goliath, ready,” Arthur murmured.

The Cane Corso’s ears flattened against his skull, his pale gold eyes fixed on the rear door.

Arthur hit the electronic release for the right-side passenger door.

“Matteo! Smoke grenades on my mark!” Arthur commanded.

“Mark!”

Matteo kicked his door open, hurling three military-grade phosphorus smoke canisters into the rain.

Within three seconds, a thick, blinding cloud of white smoke swallowed the entire bridge, neutralizing the gunmen’s laser sights and night vision.

“Move!” Arthur roared.

Arthur, Maeve, and Goliath burst from the armored sedan into the swirling white mist.

A gunman lunged through the smoke, raising an assault rifle toward Maeve.

Arthur didn't even slow down. He caught the man’s rifle barrel with his good right hand, twisted it violently until the attacker’s wrist snapped with a wet crunch, and drove his elbow straight into the man's throat, dropping him instantly into the wet asphalt.

Goliath tore through the fog like an ancient demon. The massive hound struck two shooters simultaneously, dragging them down onto the bridge deck with bone-shattering force.

Maeve spotted a fallen shooter reaching for a sidearm on the pavement near her feet.

Without thinking, she kicked the heavy steel weapon over the edge of the bridge into the churning black water seventy feet below, then slammed her pointed high-heeled shoe down onto the man’s hand with all her weight.

The man howled in pain, clutching his broken fingers.

Arthur turned, seeing what she had done, a look of fierce pride flashing across his rugged face.

“Matteo! Clear the perimeter!” Arthur roared.

From the opposite end of the bridge, the roar of twelve high-performance engines echoed through the rain.

Six armored SUVs bearing the silver V on their grilles smashed through the rear blockade. Twenty Romano loyalists poured out, opening up a devastating counter-assault that completely overwhelmed Dominic’s ambush squad within forty-five seconds.

Arthur stood in the center of the smoking bridge, the rain washing the soot from his midnight-blue tuxedo.

He walked over to Maeve, taking her hand in his.

“Are you hurt?” he asked, his voice thick with concern.

“My heel is scuffed,” Maeve said, catching her breath, a wild, fierce adrenaline coursing through her veins. “Let’s go crash this party.”
