Chapter 14 - From Grease Stains to Silk: A New Queen Rises from the Ashes

Six months later, spring arrived in New Harbor.

The bitter November rains were replaced by warm ocean breezes, blooming cherry blossoms along the avenues, and the bright morning sun reflecting off the blue waters of the harbor.

At the St. Jude Medical Pavilion at Blackwood Ridge, Maeve’s mother sat in a comfortable wheelchair in the sunlit garden, looking healthy, vibrant, and ten years younger, watching Goliath gently chase butterflies across the manicured lawn.

“I still can't believe it, Maeve,” her mother said, holding Maeve’s hand. “Every time I wake up in this beautiful place, I think I’m having a wonderful dream after a double shift at the laundromat.”

Maeve smiled, kneeling beside her mother’s chair. “It’s real, Mom. You never have to worry about a bill, a cold winter, or an empty refrigerator ever again.”

Arthur walked down the stone path, holding two glasses of freshly squeezed lemonade. He handed one to Maeve’s mother with a respectful bow.

“Good morning, Mrs. Nolan,” Arthur said warmly. “Dr. Alvarez tells me your physical therapy is two weeks ahead of schedule.”

“That’s because your dog won't let me sit still, Arthur,” Mrs. Nolan laughed, patting Goliath’s massive head as the Cane Corso trotted over to lean against her knee.

Arthur looked at Maeve, his single slate-gray eye shining with quiet happiness.

“The car is ready, Maeve,” he said. “Today is the day.”
