Chapter 11 - When the Boss Kneels: Arthur Romano’s Ultimate Choice

The storm had passed by 3:00 AM, leaving the skies above New Harbor clear and filled with a canopy of brilliant winter stars.
Arthur and Maeve stood on the private rooftop garden of the Grand Continental Hotel, looking out over the glittering lights of the harbor below. Goliath sat peacefully between them, his head resting against Maeve’s knee, enjoying the cool night breeze.
The city below was quiet now. The Romano syndicate’s loyalists had secured every dock, every warehouse, and every precinct. The war was over.
Maeve looked down at the sapphire resting against her chest, then turned to Arthur.
“It’s over, isn't it?” she asked softly.
“Yes,” Arthur replied, his pale gray eye reflecting the starlight. “Dominic’s network has been completely dismantled. Carmichael is facing twenty years in federal prison for arson and conspiracy. And the Romano family is stronger than it has ever been in its history.”
Maeve reached behind her neck, her fingers touching the platinum clasp of the heirloom necklace. “Then... I suppose you need this back.”
Arthur’s hand reached out, gently covering her fingers to stop her.
“That necklace was worn by the first woman who led this family,” Arthur said, his voice dropping into a deep, tender whisper. “It was made for a woman of fierce courage, unyielding loyalty, and a heart that cannot be bought with gold.”
He stepped closer, his broad frame blocking out the cold wind.
“For twenty years, Maeve, I believed that power meant standing alone on top of the mountain. I believed that love was a weakness that enemies could exploit. But when I was chained in that alley, bleeding in the mud, waiting for death... it wasn't my billions or my armies that saved me. It was a girl with grease on her apron who refused to let an animal suffer.”
Slowly, deliberately, the most feared underworld Don on the eastern seaboard sank down onto his right knee on the stone terrace before her.
Maeve gasped, her hands flying to her mouth, tears instantly filling her eyes.
Arthur pulled a small, vintage velvet box from his tuxedo pocket.
He opened it.
Inside lay a flawless eight-carat emerald-cut diamond ring, set in antique platinum and flanked by two tiny crossed daggers carved into the band.
“Maeve Nolan,” Arthur said, his voice trembling with an emotion he had never shown to another living soul. “You saved my life. You healed my soul. You stood beside me in the gunfire without flinching. I do not offer you a life of simple safety—I offer you an empire. I offer you my protection, my fortune, and every beat of my heart until the day I die.”
He looked up into her tear-streaked face.
“Will you marry me, Maeve? Will you become the Queen of the Romano family?”
Maeve looked down at the man who had terrified a city yet looked at her with pure, unquestioned adoration.
She didn't hesitate for a single second.

“Yes,” she whispered, her voice choked with tears of joy. “A thousand times, yes, Arthur.”
Arthur rose to his feet, slipped the massive ring onto her finger, and pulled her into his arms. His mouth found hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their fates together beneath the starlit sky, while Goliath let out a joyful, thundering bark that echoed across the sleeping city.
