Chapter 9 - The Dinner Party at the San Antonio Country Club

The Oak Hills Country Club was the pinnacle of San Antonio’s old-money society. Crystal chandeliers hung from thirty-foot vaulted ceilings, a live jazz quartet played softly near the grand fountain, and the city’s wealthiest investors, politicians, and medical executives mingled over vintage champagne.
Andrew Foster and Brenda had somehow managed to scrounge together their last remaining credit line to enter the gala. Andrew believed that if he could just speak directly to foreign investors who hadn't seen the morning news, he could salvage his company before the federal subpoenas landed.
Standing beside him near the banquet hall entrance was Gemma’s father, Robert Salas—a pompous, silver-haired attorney who looked furious.
“Andrew, what the hell happened at the hospital this morning?” Robert Salas hissed under his breath, gripping his scotch glass tightly. “The State Bar sent a formal inquiry to my office at two p.m.! My partners are threatening to remove my name from the firm!”
“It was an ambush, Robert! That’s all it was!” Andrew whispered frantically, adjusting his bow tie with sweaty fingers. “Samantha manipulated Zachary Howard! But if we can secure the seed capital for the vascular clamp tonight from the European tech syndicate, Howard won't be able to touch us!”
Brenda, wearing an ostentatious emerald gown she couldn't afford, nodded eagerly. “Yes! We just need one big investor to believe in Andrew. Once we have the capital, we countersue Samantha for defamation!”
At that moment, the master of ceremonies stepped onto the grand stage, tapping the microphone.
“Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests,” the MC announced with a broad smile. “Please turn your attention to the grand staircase. Tonight, we are honored to welcome our keynote benefactor—the Chairman of Howard Enterprises, Mr. Zachary Howard, accompanied by the newly appointed Director of Pediatric Trauma Innovation, Dr. Samantha Miller!”
The double doors at the top of the grand staircase swung open.
A collective murmur of awe swept through the ballroom.
I walked down the grand marble stairs with my hand resting gently on Zachary Howard’s arm.
I was wearing a breathtaking, midnight-blue backless silk gown that clung to every curve with regal elegance. My hair was styled in Hollywood waves cascading over one shoulder, and around my neck rested a dazzling diamond sapphire necklace from the Howard private collection.
Zachary looked devastatingly handsome in a bespoke black-tie tuxedo, his posture radiating unmatched authority and elegance.
Every head in the room turned. Cameras flashed. High-society matriarchs and corporate CEOs raised their glasses in immediate applause.
At the base of the stairs, Andrew Foster stood frozen like a stone statue. His jaw dropped, his eyes wide with disbelief.
He had spent two years telling me that I was “too plain,” that my job made me “unattractive,” and that I didn't know how to carry myself in high society.
Now, seeing me walking beside one of the most powerful billionaires in the country, looking like royalty, Andrew looked as if he had swallowed a mouthful of broken glass.
Gemma Salas, standing near the back in a plain cocktail dress, looked down at her own trembling hands, completely eclipsed and utterly invisible.
Zachary guided me smoothly through the crowd, nodding politely to city council members and hospital board directors who practically tripped over themselves to congratulate us.
We walked directly toward the VIP head table—the exact table where Andrew, Brenda, and Robert Salas were standing.
“Good evening, Andrew,” I said, my voice smooth, elegant, and dripping with poise.
Andrew swallowed hard, his voice barely a squeak. “S-Samantha... you... you look...”
“Don't bother, Mr. Foster,” Zachary interrupted, stepping forward, his presence instantly shrinking Andrew into nothingness. “We just stopped by to let you know that your table has been reassigned. The European tech syndicate you were hoping to pitch tonight? Howard Enterprises bought their parent company at four o'clock this afternoon.”
May you like
Zachary smiled smoothly, leaning in just close enough for Andrew and Robert Salas to hear:
“You don't have a pitch. You don't have an investor. And as of ten minutes ago, the San Antonio Police Department has arrived in the valet lobby with a warrant for your arrest.”
