Chapter 8 - Unmasking the Embezzlement and Stolen Clinical Patents

The color completely drained from Andrew’s face. He stumbled backward, his knees buckling until he bumped into Brenda, who was staring at Zachary Howard in pure, unadulterated terror.

“S-stolen patents?” Andrew choked out, his voice cracking. “I don’t know what you’re talking about! That’s proprietary research from my agency’s medical consulting division!”

“Save it for the grand jury, Mr. Foster,” Arthur Vance interrupted, stepping forward with another set of official documents stamped with the seal of the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

“For the past three years,” Arthur announced to the journalists and the crowd of onlookers, “Dr. Samantha Miller has been developing an innovative, micro-vascular pediatric vascular clamp designed to reduce intraoperative hemorrhaging in pediatric trauma cases. Three weeks ago, the United States Patent Office issued provisional approval under Dr. Miller’s sole name.”

Arthur flipped the page, holding up high-resolution digital scans for the news cameras to capture.

“Five days ago, Andrew Foster accessed Dr. Miller’s private home study, downloaded the proprietary CAD blueprints and clinical trial data onto an encrypted thumb drive, and submitted an unauthorized patent application under the entity Foster Innovation Holdings—listing himself and Gemma Salas as the primary inventors.”

A collective gasp swept through the hospital lobby.

Gemma grabbed Andrew’s arm, her voice shrill and panicked. “Andrew! You told me that research was in the public domain! You told me your company co-developed it with the university!”

“Shut up, Gemma!” Andrew hissed, his sweat dripping onto the collar of his suit.

“No, Gemma, don't shut up,” I said, stepping forward so that every camera caught the contrast between their frantic guilt and my calm composure. “Tell the press how Andrew promised to use my medical patent as collateral to secure a five-million-dollar venture capital loan from Howard Enterprises’ subsidiary fund. That was your grand plan, wasn't it, Andrew? Marry me, take fifty percent of the patent under Texas marital property laws, or if I didn't marry you, steal the files, marry Gemma for her father’s legal connections, and push the patent through before I noticed.”

Andrew’s eyes darted frantically around the room. The local news reporters were no longer asking him sympathetic questions. They were shouting accusations:

“Mr. Foster, did you commit corporate espionage against your own fiancé?”

“Ms. Salas, did your father’s law firm knowingly assist in filing fraudulent patent documentation?”

“Are federal charges being filed today?”

Brenda, realizing the ship was sinking, attempted one last desperate act of theatrical manipulation. She collapsed dramatically against the reception desk, clutching her chest. “My heart! Oh, my heart! You’re killing me! This woman is trying to murder my family with lies!”

Two emergency room nurses who were watching from the triage desk didn't even budge. One of them, a veteran nurse named Clara, simply crossed her arms and said, “Ma’am, your pulse rate on the lobby monitor behind you is a healthy 72. If you want an EKG, the co-pay is two hundred dollars at the front desk.”

A wave of mocking laughter rippled through the crowd.

Zachary Howard raised a single hand, and the room instantly quieted down out of sheer respect for his presence.

“As the primary stakeholder of the private equity fund Mr. Foster applied to,” Zachary said with chilling finality, “I have already forwarded the digital forensics, the IP logs, and the metadata to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Texas State Bar Association. Gemma Salas, your license to practice law in the state of Texas is currently under emergency ethics review.”

Gemma let out a muffled sob, dropping her designer handbag onto the floor as she realized her career, her social standing, and her future had just been obliterated in a matter of minutes.

“Get out of this hospital,” Zachary commanded, his voice dropping into a tone of quiet fury that made the security guards immediately step forward. “If any of you set foot on St. Luke property, or come within five hundred yards of Dr. Miller again, you will be arrested on sight for criminal harassment.”

The four security officers moved in with military precision, physically escorting Andrew, Brenda, and Gemma out through the glass doors and into the glaring midday sun, where dozens of paparazzi and local bloggers chased them all the way to their rented sedan.

As the lobby cleared and the reporters dispersed to broadcast the biggest corporate and romantic scandal of the year, Zachary turned to me.

The hard, ruthless edge on his face vanished instantly, replaced by a look of deep warmth and admiration.

“You held your ground beautifully, Dr. Miller,” Zachary said softly.

“I had good backup,” I replied, offering him a genuine, heartfelt smile. “Thank you, Zachary. For everything.”

“We’re not done yet, Samantha,” Zachary said, a charismatic, knowing glint in his eyes. “Tonight is the annual San Antonio Medical & Technology Founders Gala at the Oak Hills Country Club. Andrew Foster and Gemma’s father had reserved a VIP table to celebrate their ‘acquisition.’ I think it’s only fair that we attend in their place.”
